Overview

Traditional Greece can still be found in Zagoria, where stone-built villages perch above the Vikos Gorge. We discover this realm on hikes along shepherds' paths and across arched stone bridges that span the gorge. Heading to the famed monasteries of Meteora, we'll follow the monks' footpaths through these airy medieval sanctuaries, built in the 13th century. Our grand finale is an incredible hike up Mt. Olympus, storied home of the gods, where we gaze over the ancient world from the summit. Our Trip Leaders make culinary adventures a highlight of the journey, and we'll fuel our hikes by sampling seasonal delights of northern Greek cuisine.

From Ioánnina, we explore Dodóna, home to the Oracle of Zeus, the first “diviner” of Greece, then head to Zagoria. As we hike to the hilltop village of Vradeto (4,700'), we'll have splendid views along the Vikos Gorge, and another hike takes us down the famous Vradeto Steps, a 17th century stone staircaseleading into the gorge.
Spectacular stone bridges grace the Vikos Gorge, and we cross our first one to arrive at the handsome village of Kipi. From Vitsa, with its cascade of stone houses, an optional hike brings us up to Agia Paraskevi Monastery, and at atmospheric Koukoúli, the absence of motor traffic evokes a past era. Between hikes, we relax in village squares shaded by plane trees, and enjoy the wines and herb-infused cuisine of the region.
At Meteora, which means "suspended in the air," Eastern Orthodox monks built hermitages atop sheer pinnacles. We follow paths to these seemingly inaccessible sanctuaries, then head to Litochoro, a small town at the base of Mt. Olympus.
We start our Olympus hike at Prionia, hiking above treeline to the Spilio Agapitos Refuge (6,890'). The next day, if the weather is with us, we hike to the rocky point of Skala (9,403'), the hiker's summit of this majestic sacred mountain. Depart on Day 12 via Thessaloniki.

      What the Trip is Like

This trip is rated Level 4+, Moderate to Strenuous. It features daily hikes, with accommodations in hotels and simple pensions. Hikes are mainly on old mule trails and vary from 3-5 hours a day at altitudes of 3,000 to 9,403 feet (the summit of Skala peak on Olympus). Please note the last mile to Skala peak is loose rock.
      Review Trip Level Details

Although you carry only a daypack on the hikes, there are many steep ascents and descents and there are some sections that cross rough or rocky trails. For your own enjoyment, we recommend that you make a special effort to be in good physical condition for the trip. Regular hiking or using a stair-climbing machine at your gym are excellent preparatory exercises. You should wear sturdy, well-broken-in hiking boots for maximum comfort on the trail.

Greece has a typical Mediterranean climate. Temperatures should be in the 70s and 80s during the day, and in the 50s and 60s at night (and often colder in the fall). Cooling breezes and rain can occur at any time. Please note: Expect cold mountain weather at the refuge on Olympus (there may be snow on the mountain in autumn). The refuge is unheated but has a fireplace in the dining room, although the fire is not always lit. The sitting room and sleeping rooms are not heated. Note that on the autumn departures, you will need warmer clothes in general.

All hotels and pensions we stay in are chosen for their history and central location. Since they are often in historic buildings the rooms may not conform to the international standards that you may be accustomed to in more cosmopolitan areas. We hope that you will be able to enjoy them for their charm and local color. Single rooms can be requested, but are not always available, due to the limited space in some of our hotels. If you require a single room, please make the request as early as possible. European single rooms are often smaller than US singles.

Please note that in Greece, the dinner hour is considerably later than what it is in the US. We do our best to secure early reservations for our groups, but most often the evening meal will be at 8:00 pm.

      Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

      Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

      Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

      Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

      Level 6 – Very Strenuous

Full-day hikes (5-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Most hikes take place at altitudes above 10,000 feet, with some days ascending as high as 18,000 feet.

Although it is not known exactly when this relocation took place (sources range from the 9th to 12th centuries), we do know that 24 monasteries were built from the 13th to 15th centuries; only six remain today. For higher quality images and the ability to use long lenses for closer wildlife pictures, a DSLR camera is well worthwhile, though heavier. Most digital cameras and phones have good video options, but you may want to consider a GoPro for a lightweight, waterproof option. Always practice ahead of time with new equipment and bring your manual with you. You may want to consider renting camera equipment for your trip from places such as borrowlenses.com. This is an especially good idea for renting large zoom lenses that you may need for just one trip. Adding their extra insurance fee to cover expensive equipment is recommended.

Camera Accessories
We recommend bringing at least two large capacity memory cards or a small digital storage unit (or tablet) to back up your photos, freeing space on your memory cards. Don't forget to bring a battery charger and a backup battery so one is always charged and ready to use. For trips where you may be away from power sources for multiple days, consider looking into a solar-powered battery charger or buying additional backup batteries, and check that you have the appropriate adapter for the electrical outlets in your destination.

Sharing Your Images
We would love for you to share photos from your trip, and with your permission, may even use your photos in our marketing materials or on our photo blog. We request that you send us a small sample of your best images. Please email your photos to wtphotoblog@gmail.com or tag us @WildernessTravel on social media.

Photography Etiquette
When taking pictures of local people, be aware of cultural considerations. Approaching people with a warm smile and using polite gestures or simple phrases to ask permission to photograph them usually works well. It is always recommended to engage people in conversation before asking to photograph them, but if people do not wish to have their photo taken, please honor their requests. We urge travelers to avoid giving money in exchange for photo opportunities, which makes it harder for future travelers to have a meaningful personal interaction with local people. Please always heed your Trip Leader's guidelines for what is appropriate.
