Travel Solo (But Not Alone) On These Exciting Trips

Explore far-away places, make new friends, expand your comfort zone—the benefits of solo adventure travel are many. If you have the travel bug but don’t know where to start, our Small Group Adventures, which typically comprise solo folks, couples, and friends, will have you traversing off-the-beaten-path spots with other like-minded travelers in no time. Each journey is led by a knowledgeable, local Trip Leader—meaning no language barriers, deciphering train schedules, or wrangling your own friends to commit to travel dates. If you’re ready to go, so are we.

Everything You Need to Know

Because our accommodations are priced based on double occupancy, a single supplement is an additional fee required for solo travelers on a small group trip. Single supplement fees vary by trip, and the exact cost of a trip’s fee is noted in its Detailed Itinerary.

On almost all Wilderness Travel adventures, the single supplement guarantees you your own room and bathroom. However, some properties may require that all trip members share a room and/or bathroom at some point due to remoteness or limited space—like at the rustic hikers’ lodges we use on some alpine hiking journeys. For these trips, single rooms are offered when possible, but those who pay the single supplement may have to share a room and/or bathroom on some overnights. We note these cases clearly in our marketing materials for the trip, and these single supplement costs have been adjusted to reflect any shared nights.

Most of our trip extensions can be booked for solo travelers. In these cases, a “Solo Traveler” rate will be listed in the extension’s pricing. Note that some of our extensions need a minimum of two travelers to run.

Single accommodations for solo travelers paying the single supplement fee are not typically smaller than rooms for two guests. We aim to book the same room category for all travelers to ensure a consistent experience. However, the room sizes and styles vary at some properties, especially historical ones (the quaint rooms of Moroccan riads, for example). And at some of the smallest properties we use, we must sometimes place single travelers in true single rooms. Over the course of a trip, we do our best to allocate rooms fairly, rotating the best rooms among travelers.

While we typically require a minimum of two to four travelers for a Private Journey, solo travelers are more than welcome to join any of our Small Group or Cruise Collection adventures.

There’s a good chance you won’t be the only solo traveler in your group—more than half of our adventures have solo travelers on them. In fact, over a quarter of our travelers are singles! While our small group adventures usually have a blend of couples, friends, relatives, and solos, some trips are especially popular with single travelers—over half of our Camino de Santiago travelers are solo, for example.

Some of our most popular solo adventure travel destinations include the Alps, the Galápagos Islands, Spain’s Camino de Santiago, Uzbekistan, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Madagascar, and Peru’s Cordillera Blanca. There is no single supplement fee on some journeys like our Zambia Walking Safari, Treasures of Uzbekistan Rail Journey, or Galápagos journeys.
