From the top of glacier-clad Mont Blanc, seven stupendous valleys radiate out and stretch into France, Italy, and Switzerland. On our journey, we’ll circle this entire massif from one country to the next—on foot! The “TMB” is one of Europe’s classics and we’ve honed it to perfection. Our impeccably designed hiking days bring you to epic glaciers, wildflower meadows, and classic alpine hamlets as we explore three countries’ culinary delights. Overnights are in cozy hotels and hikers’ inns, and our team of Trip Leaders brings a wonderful esprit to the adventure.
Arrive: Chamonix
Depart: Chamonix
Chamonix sits right at the foot of Mont Blanc (15,770'), the highest mountain in Western Europe. From this charming town, a climbing and skiing center for over 100 years, our first hike brings us below the vast Bionnassay Glacier and the Col de Tricot (6,955') for a magnificent view of the Dômes de Miage, one of the most spectacular ridges on the Mont Blanc massif. We descend from here to our hotel in Les Contamines.
Starting at the chapel of Notre Dame de la Gorge, we ascend through gentle forests to the Col de la Croix du Bonhomme, with a descent to the summer village of Les Chapieux (5,128'). On Day 4, we leave France and enter Italy’s majestic Aosta Valley, encircled by towering peaks. From the remote Vallée des Glaciers, we climb eastward to the Col de la Seigne. There are fantastic vistas of Mont Blanc’s sheer 11,000-foot southern face as we go, and we’ll descend to stylish Courmayeur, the Italian counterpart of Chamonix.
Crossing into Switzerland on foot, we traverse the Val Ferret beneath massive granite peaks, then cross the Grand Col Ferret (8,324') for views of the legendary Grandes Jorasses peaks on the Swiss border. From lakeside Champex, we follow a shepherds’ trail with views of the Rhône Valley, and the magnificent Trient Glacier is in view as we cross the Col de la Forclaz (5,010').
Our trail climbs through pine forest to the Col du Balme (7,201'), the border between Switzerland and France, and we once again overlook the beautiful Chamonix Valley, with the glory of the Mont Blanc massif before us. From here we descend to Chamonix—mission accomplished! Depart on Day 9.
Scroll through our signature accommodations for this trip below. Although it is highly unlikely, we may make substitutions when necessary.
Most hiking is between 4,000 and 9,000 feet, with considerable elevation gain and loss along the way. While the TMB is not exceptionally high, it can be steep and rugged. This trip is not technical, but is aimed for those who have some experience hiking in the mountains. At lower elevations, the trails are usually packed dirt, but at higher elevations they are often much rockier and more uneven, with sections of loose scree, large boulders, and occasionally glacial snow. Recent rockslides may impact the routes we use. On some days, you will encounter sections of narrow, exposed trails. You will also occasionally need to use your hands to scramble over and between a jumble of boulders. Your experienced mountain guides are there to assist you if needed. No climbing or mountaineering experience is necessary, but all participants must be in good physical condition, have good balance, be comfortable with moderate levels of exposure, and be confident on their feet.
Of course, you are always free to skip a day’s hike and travel to the next destination in the support vehicle. The support vehicle transports the group’s luggage, so you only need to carry a daypack for items you need for the day (sweater, camera, water bottle). Hiking poles are highly recommended.
Overnights are in mountain villages with great charm and character. In Chamonix, we stay in wonderful 4-star hotels. Outside of Chamonix, we stay in small, comfortable hotels that can be busy during the hiking season. Please note that these are hikers’ hotels, not five-star resorts. The rooms are clean and comfortable, but are not always of uniform size or amenities. Our leaders do their best to assign rooms in a fair way so that all participants experience an equal advantage throughout the trip as a whole. Single rooms are offered when possible, but those who pay the Single Supplement may have to share a room for up to two nights during the trip. In Les Chapieux, couples may also have to share a room.

The Tour du Mont Blanc is one of the most iconic long-distance hiking routes in Europe, circling the Mont Blanc massif through France, Italy, and Switzerland.
This is a strenuous trek with daily hikes of 8 to 11 miles and elevation gains of up to 4,000 feet. It's designed for hikers looking for a challenge and in good fitness condition.
The best months to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc are June through September, when the trails are generally free of snow, wildflowers are in bloom, and mountain huts are open.
Bringing the right gear for your TMB hike ensures you will start the trip on the right foot.
