Normally, a drive from Maun to Moremi is an all-day game drive, but flying to our private camp allows us the most time to be in the heart of the bush, experiencing all the wonders of Botswana right when we arrive! We'll spend the next several days enjoying morning and afternoon game drives throughout the park's diverse landscapes. Moremi is the first national park in southern Africa to have been created and administered by an African tribe, the BaTawana, on their own land. Located in the northeast corner of the Delta, Moremi is an ornithologist's paradise, with almost every species of central-southern African bird, including bee-eaters, darters, colorful kingfishers, and a variety of waterfowl. We may also spot wildlife like tsessebe and Burchell's zebra, along with ostrich and predators such as lion, wild dog, and spotted hyena. The mopane tree is common here, and its butterfly-shaped leaves and seeds offer a crucial source of protein for wildlife, with elephants in particular attracted to its nutritious leaves. Our campsite is at Xakanaxa, on the tip of a mopane “tongue” jutting into the Delta: a beautiful setting of secret pools, tall forest, and open grassland. This mix of ecological niches ensures a good variety of birds and game, and we explore by 4WD vehicle and boat. Our campsite is ours alone, though we are sometimes joined by hippos that come out at night to feed on the grass near our tents. It's not uncommon for grazing elephant to pass through, and it's exhilarating to see wild dog and leopard prints outside tents in the morning. Overnights are in our private mobile camp, offering an authentic bush atmosphere that no safari lodge or permanent tented camp can offer. on Day 1; BLD on Days 2 and 3<\/p>","Breakfast":0,"Lunch":0,"Dinner":1,"Overnight":"","Travel_Type":"","Quotation":"","Quotation_Attribution":"","Itinerary_Location":"","Latitude":"","Longitude":"","Brief":false},{"DayFrom":4,"DayTo":5,"Headline":"Okavango Delta","ActivityOverview":"","EstimatedLength":"","ActivityLevel":"","ItinBlock":"The 800-mile-long Okavango is “the river that never finds the sea,” disappearing into a remarkable maze of lagoons, channels, and islands to create the Okavango Delta. The Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to some of the world's most endangered species of large mammals, making it the ideal base for our explorations. We'll take a fascinating 6-hour boat ride from our Xakanaxa camp to reach our next lodge, set in the remote western corner of the Okavango Delta. It's the perfect place for exploring the Okavango on foot and by motorboat and mokoro (a dugout canoe navigated by a skilled poler). During our excursions, we should see bushbuck, a plethora of birds, lechwe (a semi-aquatic antelope), and perhaps even buffalo, elephant, and the shy sitatunga, another antelope adapted to this watery realm. The Savuti Channel itself dried up in 1980, but its marsh is now a vast grassland attracting migrating herds of herbivores. This is one of the best places to find lion, leopard, and other predators and their prey—large herds of giraffe, kudu, vervet monkey, and baboon. At night, the area comes to life with animal sounds—the “whooping” calls of wild dog, the rumbles of elephant, and even the cackling cries of hyena—and the sight of dazzling stars overhead. Itinerary

Our private charter flight carries us right to the stunning Moremi Game Reserve (avoiding an all-day drive). Here in the eastern Okavango, we track predators such as lion, wild dog, and spotted hyena. Our camp is a beautiful setting of secret pools, tall forest, and open grassland. It's ours alone—but don't be surprised if a grazing elephant passes through! Moremi is also an ornithologist's paradise, with almost every species of central-southern African bird, including bee-eaters and colorful kingfishers.
A river journey with game viewing en route brings us to a boutique lodge with reed-and-thatch chalets in the western Okavango Delta. It's the perfect spot for exploring the Okavango on foot, by motorboat, and by mokoro (dugout canoe navigated by a skilled poler). We should see bushbuck, a rainbow of birdlife, the shy sitatunga and semi-aquatic lechwe antelope, and perhaps even buffalo and elephant. We'll appreciate the calm solitude of this quintessential Delta setting.
Leaving the Okavango ecosystem, we get a bird's-eye view of the Delta as we fly by private charter to southern Chobe National Park, a legendary elephant refuge and one of the best places to find lion, leopard, and large herds of giraffe, kudu, and baboon. At night, Chobe comes to life with the whooping calls of wild dog and the rumbles of elephant. From our mobile camp in the Serondella area, with its photogenic baobab trees, we'll take a private cruise on the Chobe River to see big herds of tuskers ambling down to the river at sunset.
Our safari ends with a tour of Victoria Falls and an overnight at the stately Victoria Falls Hotel. Depart on Day 11.

    Day 10 (1 night)

The stately Victoria Falls Hotel is a “grand dame” with a true British colonial ambiance, from its manicured gardens to its renowned elegant afternoon tea service. It was built in 1905 and is just a 15-minute walk from Victoria Falls. The halls, reading rooms, photos lining the walls, and grand terrace offer a vivid sense of a bygone era, and guest rooms, with en suite bathrooms, are furnished in period pieces. What the Trip is Like

This trip is rated Level 2, Easy to Moderate. It is a vehicle-based camping safari, with seven nights camping in our private mobile safari camps. It will enjoyed by anyone in reasonably good health. Although the trip is not rigorous, it does involve some long driving days over rough roads and game tracks—you will enjoy it more if you are in good shape and good health. Any African safari is an adventure, and the traveler to Africa should bring along flexibility, a sense of humor, curiosity about new peoples and places, and an openness to the unexpected.
    Review Trip Level Details
The best game viewing period is during the “dry” season, which runs from late March to October. Because of the minimal rainfall during this season, the bush turns golden brown and in many areas is beaten flat, so game viewing is easier and animals concentrate around major water sources. The Okavango Delta's water level starts to rise during these months. October to April can be very hot, with most of the rainfall between December and February. This season characteristically has hot sunny days with afternoon thundershowers. This season is excellent for the viewing of newborn mammals, summer flowers, and the migration of rare birds. Predator viewing during this time remains quite good.

Our mobile tented camping safaris in Botswana provide a true bush experience without sacrificing comfort. Our comfortable walk-in tents feature cozy beds, linens, tent lamps, and have en suite bathrooms with a toilet, mirror, sink, and hot water shower. Our crew sets up camp and prepares all meals.

Delicious food is served in a comfortable dining tent. You'll find camping delightful and very comfortable, and you will appreciate how close to nature you feel.

We travel by Toyota 4WD Land Cruiser “go-anywhere” safari vehicles equipped with a refrigerator for cold drinks and a reference library on flora, fauna, and avifauna. They carry five trip members per vehicle, with guaranteed window seating. During drives and walks, we can at times get quite close to wild animals. Being very quiet improves everyone's chances of observation. In the interest of safety, your Trip Leaders explain limitations on movement while on game drives, in the safari vehicles, and around camp. Incidents with wild animals are extremely rare on safaris, but no trip can guarantee immunity from such incidents. Wilderness Travel is not to be held responsible for incidents involving the behavior of wildlife.

We were all impressed by the cook's skills over an open fire—the breads were a big hit! We looked forward to our evening meal under the flickering oil lamps. The table was decorated with napkins that symbolized some of the animals we spotted each day. Our tent was always clean we had hot water every evening for showers. They washed our clothes! Every morning we were woken with a cup of coffee. No detail was missed, from the moment they greeted us until we said goodbye. We felt spoiled."

    Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

    Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

    Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

    Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

    Level 6 – Very Strenuous

Full-day hikes (5-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Most hikes take place at altitudes above 10,000 feet, with some days ascending as high as 18,000 feet.

After finishing school, Daniel applied for a position at the Botswana Department of Wildlife and National Parks and was immediately given a post as a game ranger in Chobe National Park where he worked from 1999 to 2005.
