Hike by day, then enjoy a glass of wine, a fine dinner, and a cozy bed each night! This unique journey features fantastic hiking days in the most beautiful parts of the Middle Atlas and High Atlas mountains and overnights in alpine-style lodges and hotels—no camping! We've selected special routes in both mountain ranges for fascinating cultural encounters and an opportunity to hike in nature reserves where rare forests of cedar, oak, and juniper are protected. Our trails lead through orchards and farms, among goat herders and their flocks, and past mud-brick homes in Berber villages. We'll round out our adventure with urban walks in Fes and Marrakesh, with time to explore their unforgettable markets and monuments.

The vibrant cultures of southern Spain and Morocco share a common history, yet retain their own exotic character. Our adventure combining the magic of Spain with the mystery of Morocco features great Moorish architecture, dazzling historical sites, sumptuous cuisine, and wonderful hikes in a ravishingly beautiful countryside. From Còrdoba, Andalucia's most northerly province, we journey to passionate Sevilla, then to the striking pueblos blancos (“white villages”) of Ronda and Grazalema. Ferrying across the Straits of Gibraltar to the ancient Moroccan port of Tangier, we head up to the craggy Rif Mountains to meet the Berber people at the dramatic “blue” village of Chefchaouen, dating from the 13th century. Our grand finale finds us in amazing Fes, which writer Paul Bowles called an “enchanted labyrinth sheltered from time.”

Morocco's sensuous beauty is legendary, from imperial cities with labyrinthine souks to the awesome grandeur of the Sahara. Our Private Journey discovers this graceful land in Fes—a walled city suspended in a medieval dream—and in the storied casbahs of Marrakesh, in the red-rock canyons of the High Atlas, and in a stunning desert oasis where dunes stretch to the horizon. You have a private guide with you from Day 1 through the afternoon of Day 8, and your accommodations are in hotels as well as riads, traditional mansions that have been converted into boutique hotels of character, with charming Moorish and Andalusian architecture, tiled central courtyards open to the sky, and peaceful rooftop gardens. Each riad is unique and has its own special personality and decor. At journey's end, you can extend your travels to the enchanting walled town of Essaouira on the edge of the sea.
