Fes is hauntingly beautiful, with its Arabic-Moorish architecture and honeycomb of twisting alleys. We enter the dazzling 9th century medina through one of its four medieval gates and discover a mile-long network of souks, open-air cafes, and gardens.
Ascending into the Middle Atlas, we'll meet with a local environmentalist and hike into the fragrant Azrou National Forest at 5,000 feet, where we'll see Barbary macaques. The next day we hike though forests of cork and Holm oak and are welcomed for lunch with a semi-nomadic family.
In spectacular Toubkal National Park, our trail leads up to Tizi Mzik (7,965') for great views. The next day in the lush orchards of the Ouirgane Valley, we stop in for tea with a local family and learn about the conservation work of the High Atlas Foundation. Our hotel here is set among rose gardens and has a spa and swimming pool.
In legendary Marrakesh, we visit the 11th century medina and the central Djemaa el Fna Square, replete with snake charmers, fire eaters, and fortune tellers, and explore the fabled souks, where we find everything from pottery to fabrics. Depart on Day 11.

      What the Trip is Like

What the Trip Is Like The trip is Level 3+, Moderate, according to our trip grading system. It combines city explorations on foot with five days of moderate hiking, 3.5 to 6.5 hours each day, in mountain environments.
      Review Trip Level Details

Our hikes take place in altitudes of 5,000 to 7,000 feet. The trails are mostly mule track and well-worn paths from village use, but there are some short, steep sections. When we have a trailside lunch, it will usually be picnic style, with fresh salads, cheese, bread, and other items prepared by our cook, and served in a dining tent with a simple table and chairs.

Each participant should be in good health, since most days on the trip include hiking on paths that are a mix of dirt and rocky terrain; the trails are occasionally steep but not exposed. Being in good physical condition is important for your enjoyment of the trip. The best way to get accustomed to walking and being on your feet throughout the day is by incorporating exercise into your schedule leading up to your departure. We recommend walking, hiking, and engaging in physical activities; stair-climbing machines are excellent preparation for walking uphill.

Morocco has climatic variations but the weather is largely moderate, with a cooling influence from the Mediterranean and Atlantic. The average temperature is 62°-73°F on the west coast and 50°-80°F in the interior. In the mountains, peaks are snow-capped most of the year but it can be hot during the daytime. In the south, the weather is hot and dry throughout the year, and temperatures can drop dramatically at night.

Please note that in traditional Moroccan riads, no two rooms are exactly alike. Many riads were originally private residences, and each room was designed with its own unique layout, size, and decor. While we book the same room categories, you might notice differences in the design or features of individual rooms. This is part of the charm of staying in a riad—it offers a truly authentic experience, and one that we feel is incredibly important. But, please keep in mind that each property will have different room sizes and styles due to the unique nature of the property itself.

Hike by day, enjoy a glass of wine, a fine dinner, and a cozy bed each night! On this fascinating cultural and hiking journey with veteran Trip Leader Mark Gordon, we&#39;ll hike and explore both the Middle Atlas and High Atlas mountains, with their ancient cultures and parks and reserves where rare forests of cedar, oak, and juniper are protected. With Mark&#39;s local connections, we&#39;ll be able to see and learn about the Moroccans&#39; efforts to conserve, enhance, and develop these great resources while also allowing the rural and seminomadic people to live harmoniously within them. Mark&#39;s experience in Morocco began decades ago in the Peace Corps and he has lived for years in this storied kingdom, knows Moroccan culture deeply, and is conversant in the High Atlas dialect of Berber and Moroccan Arabic. Our hikes lead us through orchards, farms, and fields, among goat herders and their flocks, and past mud-brick homes in Berber villages. The mountain landscapes are enchanting&mdash;the High Atlas acts as a barrier between the fertile Mediterranean plains of the north and the sands of the Sahara in the south, and the result is a dramatic landscape where arid range meets tumbling rivers and lush vegetation beneath a backdrop of towering snow-capped summits. We&#39;ll round out our adventure with urban hikes in the ancient cities of Fes and Marrakesh, their gardens, markets, and monuments. The exchange rate is fixed by the government, so you will get the same rate wherever you change money. Money can be changed at the Fes hotel, but not again until Marrakesh. Hotel cashiers have limited hours: usually from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and again from 3:00 to 6:00 pm, so try to coordinate around these hours. For larger purchases, credit cards can be used in the main cities but not in smaller towns.<br><br>\nYou will need to budget spending money for gratuities, any meals not included in the trip itinerary, and personal items such as beverages, phone calls, etc. Depending on how much shopping you like to do, we recommend you bring about $500 in cash and one or two major credit cards (Visa or MasterCard). Most purchases over $50 can be charged on your credit card, although you will need cash for shopping in the city souks. Souk merchants prefer dirham, as converting from US dollars (USD) to dirham can be confusing (and you may not get the best conversion rate). So, please make sure to have dirham with you if you plan to shop at the souks. There are ATMs in the larger cities, where you can pull out money. To use an ATM internationally, you must have a four-digit PIN. If you plan to use your credit cards, inform your credit card company before your departure that you will be using the card abroad.","Custom_Tipping":"<p>Tipping is completely discretionary, but over the years, clients have asked us for tipping guidelines to reward guides for outstanding service. More traditional dishes are a rich, spicy bean soup called harira, as well as meat kebabs, tajine (a slow-cooked meat stew often made with chicken, seafood, vegetables, olives, prunes, or almonds), and pastilla, a poultry pie made with filo pastry and cinnamon. And of course, there is couscous, a staple based on steamed semolina. For dessert in restaurants, you may find cr&egrave;me caramel and almond-filled pastries. Local yogurts are delicious, and seasonal fruits are abundant. The national drink is th&eacute; &agrave; la menthe&mdash;green tea flavored with fresh mint and sweetened with sugar. French-style coffee is widely available, as are bottled water and soft drinks. The drinking of alcohol takes a low profile in Morocco, but beer and wine are available in restaurants and at hotel bars.
