Morocco
“Morocco” may bring to mind images of camel trains traversing the scorching desert. But in many areas north of the Sahara, Morocco has a temperate climate similar to that of other Mediterranean countries (Spain, at its closest point, is less than ten miles away). Read on to find out more about what the weather is like each month of the year—and which months are best to visit Morocco.
Wilderness Travel times our trips for the country’s best weather, when temperatures are moderate and skies tend to be sunny. And note that even the desert can get cold at night, especially in winter and early spring.

January is the best time for desert camping. While January is the coldest month of the year, daytime temperatures in the mid 50sF to low 60sF allow for pleasant exploration. That’s especially so in the Sahara, where days can hover in the mid 60s. On WT’s Morocco: Camels to Casbahs itinerary, we take advantage of the perfect desert weather with two nights in a luxury camp, where we enjoy sundowners, stargaze, and trace the golden dunes by 4WD and on foot.

February is the best time for Saharan splendor. For mild temperatures in the south and the Sahara and crowd-free souks in the major cities of Marrakesh and Casablanca, plan your Morocco visit for February. Temperatures are similar to January, with the Sahara seeing still-pleasant days in the 60s (compared to 100-plus in the summer months). February isn’t as wet as January, but you’ll still likely have a rainy day or two during your visit.

March is the best time for ideal spring conditions. Spring is a great time to visit Morocco, as average daytime temperatures in coastal cities range from the mid 60s to the low 80s. The Dades Valley is in vibrant bloom in early spring, from late February through March, and has cooler average highs in the 50s, dropping to lows in the 30s at night. In the north, light rains may stretch to mid-March.

April is the best time for the Atlas Mountains. The countryside is still lush and green, and the High Atlas peaks retain their snow-capped grandeur, so mountain hikes are particularly spectacular. WT takes advantage of these ideal springtime conditions across the Middle Atlas and High Atlas mountains on our Hiker’s Journey to Morocco adventure. In cities like Marrakesh and Fes, the medinas and popular sights begin to get busy.

May is the best time for exploring northern Morocco. With clear days and balmy nights, May is one of the best times of year to visit Morocco, especially if you’re planning an adventure that spans the coasts and cities to the mountains. In the Atlas Mountains, days are in the low 70s; in the cities, like Marrakesh, it can start to get hot, reaching into the high 80s. But if you stay in the north of the country, temperatures often stay in the 60s. WT explores the north on our Southern Spain to Morocco journey, which traces the charming cities of Tangier and Fes, the craggy Rif Mountains, and the dramatic “blue” village of Chefchaouen.

We don’t recommend visiting Morocco in June, July, and August. It starts to get swelteringly hot in much of the country in June. The interior cities of Marrakesh and Fes often reach the mid 90s, which can be dangerous for visitors unacclimated to the high temperatures. The Sahara, already extreme, regularly exceeds 100°F in summer months. But it can be a good time to hike in the High Atlas mountains, after the snows have melted. Daytime temperatures are in the 90s in the valleys, but cool down to the 70s as we gain elevation. Highs in the coastal cities are in the high 70s and low 80s.

With the high temperatures across much of the country, WT doesn’t schedule adventures during the height of summer.
September is the best time to hike the High Atlas. While much of the country is still quite hot, September is an ideal time to visit certain areas of Morocco, namely the High Atlas mountains. In September, WT embarks on our Morocco: The High Atlas Trek adventure to take advantage of clear days that average in the 70s, making for good camping weather. We’ll embrace the region’s high-altitude Berber culture, stopping to share mint tea with Morocco’s original inhabitants.

October is the best time for cross-country adventures. This is an excellent time to visit, as Morocco’s weather is finally mild enough for sightseeing in the cities, the Saharan desert is comfortable, and the Atlas Mountains turn even more pleasant. Highs range from the 60s to the high 80s. Be sure to pack a rain jacket if you’re heading north, as you might experience the occasional rainy day before the wet season begins in earnest in November.

November is the best time for pleasant fall hiking. In November the rains begin, but travelers who don’t mind a couple showers will find few crowds and comfortable temperatures throughout much of the country, particularly in the Sahara. It’s also perfect fall hiking weather, with the Atlas averaging in the low to mid 60s.

December is the best time for cool sightseeing. While WT doesn’t run any trips this month, December’s cooler temperatures and fewer crowds make it a great time for sightseeing in typically touristy areas like Marrakesh and Fes. Just make sure you pack layers, especially if you plan to visit the desert, as nights will get chilly. Expect the occasional rain shower, too.
The spring months of April and May and the fall months of September and October are the best times to visit Morocco. During these seasons you’ll avoid the intense heat of summer and the chillier weather and rain that come in the winter.
The rainy season in Morocco tends to run from November through March, though you can expect the occasional shower in October and April, too. Generally, the southern and eastern parts of the country that overlap with the Sahara see the least rain.
We recommend avoiding Marrakesh during the summer months of June, July, and August. Daytime highs often hit 100F or above. You’ll find fewer tourists during these months, but the heat can be dangerous for those who are unaccustomed.
