From the Alps to the Adriatic

Hiking in Slovenia

The alpine gem of Slovenia, one of Europe’s best-kept secrets, is a land of majestic snow-capped mountains, glacier-carved valleys, fairytale villages, and Venetian ports along the blue Adriatic. Its tiny capital, stunning Ljubljana, is one of Europe’s most charming cities, nestled below a hilltop castle. Our adventure in Slovenia has it all, from glorious hikes in the alpine world below the snow-capped Julian Alps to exploration of charming mountain towns including Kobarid, immortalized in Hemingway’s classic novel, A Farewell to Arms. On the sun-splashed Adriatic Coast, the renaissance-era port of Piran beckons us with its labyrinthine streets and waterfront cafes. Join us to discover Slovenia, an enchanting and untouched corner of Europe with a welcoming culture and world-class hiking.

Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-3
Ljubljana, Slovenia / Logarska Dolina

After a walking tour of Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, with its magical Old Town of baroque architecture, we head to Logarska Dolina, an emerald green valley set below a sheer wall of peaks. Our hikes above this glacier-carved valley, one of the most stunning natural settings in Europe, bring us past waterfalls to the high mountain refuge at Klemenca Jama and to the Robanov Kot Valley, with grand views all the way. We enjoy a traditional lunch at a farm in this other-worldly valley.

Days 4-6
Lake Bled / Radovljica / Bohinj / Julian Alps

A gondola ride takes us across Lake Bled, with its island crowned by a 14th century church, and we explore the lovely Renaissance town of Radovljica en route to mountain-ringed Lake Bohinj in the heart of the Julian Alps. These dramatic limestone peaks, topped by Mt. Triglav (9,394'), are protected in Triglav National Park. In this alpine world, we follow the translucent emerald-green waters of Mostnica Gorge to reach high meadows brimming with wildlflowers and surrounded by jagged peaks. On Day 6 we take a cable car up to 5,000 feet for our hike to the top of Mt. Rodica, where views from the summit can stretch as far as the Dolomites in Italy.

Days 7-8
Kobarid / Julian Alps

From the Kluze fortress, once captured by Bonaparte’s troops, we hike through magnificent alpine scenery to the mountain village of Bovec, with its Gothic churches and traditional houses. The next day, we hike to Dreznica, a picturesque little village set in the craggy highlands of Mt. Krn. Overnights are in Kobarid, with its award-winning museum chronicling the town’s dramatic history during the First World War.

Days 9-11
Skocjan Caves / Piran

After a visit to a family farm, we explore the vast underground world of the Skocjan Caves, a World Heritage Site with eleven connected chambers full of stalactites and stalagmites. On the coast, we savor the beautiful city of Piran, with its Venetian buildings nestled close to the blue sea. Our hike through winding streets up to the cathedral above town brings us magnificent views across the Adriatic. The next day, we boat to Piran’s ancient salt pans, with a hike along the coast back to Piran. Depart on Day 11 via Ljubljana.
