Fez, Marrakesh, Essaouira, and the Golden Dunes of the Sahara

Morocco: Camels to Casbahs

Some of the most glorious scenery in Africa is in enchanting Morocco, land of mud-brick casbah towns, medieval medinas, and mythic charms. We experience Morocco’s sensuous beauty in the epic Sahara, in royal cities, in pilgrim towns, at Roman ruins, and on hikes in spectacular red-rock canyons sculpted by nature and time. The centerpiece of our journey is a 3-day desert trek by camel (or on foot, if you prefer) with traditional Tuaregs, the blue-robed nomads of the desert. Morocco’s evocative ancient cities also provide a visual feast for us, from the old imperial capital of Marrakesh to amazing Fez, a walled city suspended in a medieval dream, and tiny Essaouira, an 18th century gem set by the sea.

Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-2
Casablanca / Rabat

In Rabat, the capital, we stroll the picturesque Oudaya Kasbah and explore the Chellah, a spectacular walled and towered royal necropolis.

Days 3-4
Moulay Idriss / Fez

After a visit to the pilgrim town of Moulay Idriss and Roman ruins of Volubulis, we enter the incredible medina of ancient Fez. We head out on foot into its honeycomb of twisting alleys of Arabic-Moorish architecture, savoring the scent of spices, orange blossoms, sizzling lamb kabobs, and sweet honey cakes, and watch scenes unchanged in centuries.

Days 5-8
Sahara Camel Safari

In the silent world of the Moroccan Sahara, we enjoy an unforgettable trek and a chance to live the life of a desert nomad for a few days. We ride (or hike) across ever-changing desert-scapes, with our Berber crew preparing our meals and our camps while our Tuareg guides tend our camels. Our last camp is at the foot of the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, one of the great sights of Morocco.

Days 9-11
Todra / Dades / Ait Ben Haddou

We hike in the dramatic Dades Gorge, where Berber nomads roam with their herds, and the Todra Gorge, a narrow canyon lined with tiny villages, and visit the desert citadel of Ait Ben Haddou, a stunning medieval casbah.

Day 12
Essaouira

On the Atlantic Coast is the charming walled town of Essaouira, an artists’ haven of whitewashed houses with blue shutters. We explore on foot to discover the fishermen’s market, artisan workshops, and the tiny walled medina.

Days 13-15
Marrakesh

Fabled Marrakesh is a beautiful palm-fringed city more Berber than Arabic, a metropolis for the tribes of the Atlas since the 11th century. On foot and by horse-drawn carriage, we discover Marrakesh’s secrets. Depart on Day 15
