After a pizza lunch in the colorful city where it was invented, we hike up to the crater rim of steaming Mt. Vesuvius, the only active volcano in continental Europe. We head to ravishing Ravello, where our hikes bring us high above the Amalfi Coast. One hike leads from the lush Valle delle Ferriere, a protected nature reserve, to the sleepy hilltop village of Scala, surrounded by terraced vineyards.

We’ll go mozzarella and wine tasting, explore Paestum, home to three of the best preserved Doric temples in the world, and stroll in the Roman city of Pompeii, buried—yet preserved—in the legendary eruption of 79 AD. After a special overnight in the coastal village of Agerola, we hike the famed Sentiero degli Dei (“Path of the Gods”), stopping for lunch with a postcard-perfect view of Positano from high above the crowds. From Sorrento, a ferry brings us to Capri for overnight on Day 6.

Two nights on Capri give us plentiful opportunities to explore this gorgeous Mediterranean gem. Roman ruins, high trails with sweeping views, and cobbled lanes fragrant with lacy swathes of wisteria characterize the island. One hike brings us to an imperial Roman villa and another leads to the top of Monte Solaro for views stretching across the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius. Depart on Day 9 via Naples.

      What the Trip is Like

This trip is rated a Level 3+, Moderate, according to our trip grading system. Review Trip Level Details

Our hikes take place in a variety of terrains and include hilly countryside walks, scrambles over limestone and lava rock, ancient stone paths in town, and forest trails. There are very steep sections of stone staircases that can be hard on the knees, and slippery when it's been raining. Hiking poles are highly recommended. Many of the trails are on rocky and uneven ground, so it is important that you have proper hiking footwear that is comfortable and has good traction. Hiking in this part of Italy brings you face to face with the delicate balance between urbanization and unspoiled nature.

The weather in Amalfi and Capri in late spring and early fall is usually very pleasant, with temperatures between 70°F and 80°F during the day and 50°F and 60°F at night. Cool breezes and showers can occur at any time.
We spend one night in a restored 18th century agriturismo (historic farmhouse). While it is rustic, it is charming and comfortable and chosen for its proximity to the ruins of Paestum. All the other nights are in comfortable 3- and 4-star hotels.  Since our accommodations are often in historic buildings, the rooms are not always of uniform or international size. Our leaders do their best to assign rooms in a fair way so that all participants experience an equal advantage throughout the trip as a whole. Single rooms can be requested but are not always available, due to the limited space in the hotels. If you prefer a single room, please make your request as early as possible.
We have most of our meals in charming local restaurants. We savor Amalfi's fresh-caught seafood, Neapolitan cuisine, and wine from the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius. Please note that in Europe, the dinner hour is considerably later than what it is in the US. We do our best to secure early reservations for our groups, but most often the evening meal will be at 7:30 pm.
Our van will transport the group's luggage, so you only need to carry a daypack for items you need for the day (rain gear, sweater, camera, water bottle, etc.). Trip members are always free to skip a day's hike and travel to the next destination in the support vehicle (or remain at the hotel if we are not transferring that day).

Our morning visit to this extraordinary site is a chance to learn about everyday life in the ancient world of the Romans. We walk between rows of preserved Roman shops and houses, and along street after street that still show the marks of the ruts worn by chariot wheels in the paving blocks. The Forum was a busy shopping area; nearby was the meat and fish market; and worshippers gathered at the Tempio di Giove (Temple of Jupiter) at the north end. After lunch in the town of Pompeii we drive to Agerola and our trailhead in the small village of San Lazzero. Our hike along the cliffs provides us with views high above the coast and brings us to our hotel in the charming village of Bomerano in the hills of Agerola. The juxtaposition of being so close to the sea while in a mountain environment adds another dimension to the wonders of the Amalfi coast.<\/p>","Breakfast":1,"Lunch":1,"Dinner":1,"Overnight":"(or Hotel Gentile)","Travel_Type":"2.5 hours","Quotation":"","Quotation_Attribution":"","Itinerary_Location":"","Latitude":"","Longitude":"","Brief":false},{"DayFrom":6,"DayTo":7,"Headline":"Sentiero degli Dei (&ldquo;Path of the Gods&rdquo;) \/ Capri","ActivityOverview":"Meals: B, L, D (Day 6); B, L (Day 7)","EstimatedLength":"","ActivityLevel":"Hiking Details:","ItinBlock":"<p><strong>Day 6:<\/strong> We get an early start on the exquisite Sentiero degli Dei (&ldquo;Path of the Gods&rdquo;) from Agerola to Nocelle&mdash;one of the finest walks on the Amalfi Coast. There are very steep sections of stone staircases that can be hard on the knees, and slippery when it's been raining. Hiking poles are highly recommended. Many of the trails are on rocky and uneven ground, so it is important that you have proper hiking footwear that is comfortable and has good traction. Cool breezes and showers can occur at any time.","Custom_Accommodations":"We spend one night in a restored 18th century agriturismo (historic farmhouse). While it is rustic, it is charming and comfortable and chosen for its proximity to the ruins of Paestum. All the other nights are in comfortable 3- and 4-star hotels.&nbsp; Since our accommodations are often in historic buildings, the rooms are not always of uniform or international size. Our leaders do their best to assign rooms in a fair way so that all participants experience an equal advantage throughout the trip as a whole. Single rooms can be requested but are not always available, due to the limited space in the hotels. If you prefer a single room, please make your request as early as possible.","Custom_Cuisine":"We have most of our meals in charming local restaurants. We savor Amalfi&apos;s fresh-caught seafood, Neapolitan cuisine, and wine from the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius. Please note that in Europe, the dinner hour is considerably later than what it is in the US. We do our best to secure early reservations for our groups, but most often the evening meal will be at 7:30 pm.","Custom_Transportation":"Our van will transport the group's luggage, so you only need to carry a daypack for items you need for the day (rain gear, sweater, camera, water bottle, etc.).
