Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

With the rapidly evolving outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19), we know there is much concern and uncertainty related to travel. We are constantly monitoring the situation, and adjusting our approach as conditions evolve. We will keep this page updated as frequently as possible with any changes and new developments.

As of March 31, we have canceled all trips departing on or before May 31, 2020. A growing number of countries are putting stricter travel restrictions in place, including closing their borders entirely. As a result, airlines are canceling flight routes across the world and international travel is, for the time being, no longer possible.

Wilderness Travel’s Approach

Please know that the safety and well-being of our guests will always be our highest priority. We have been closely monitoring recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the US Department of State, as well as any new travel restrictions from individual countries.

We remain hopeful to resume operating trips starting in June, but this is a moving target—our position will evolve as conditions change and government policies are updated. We will try to make a decision on whether or not to cancel a trip at least 45 days before the departure date, as we assess how the situation changes in the next days and weeks. Please know that we have never hesitated to cancel departures when that decision seemed prudent for the safety of our guests, and have worked tirelessly to recover their full travel investment should this need arise.

Answers to Your Questions

What happens if WT cancels my trip because of COVID-19 travel restrictions?

If we need to cancel a trip because of COVID-19 travel restrictions, your Trip Specialist will be in touch and provide more information specific to your trip.

You can choose between the following options:

  • Transfer to another departure
  • 100% credit to use towards a future trip departing on or before December 31, 2022, less any penalties by hotels or local service providers that we are unable to waive
  • A full refund of your trip costs, less any penalties by hotels or local service providers that we are unable to waive. We will use good faith efforts to recover and refund as much money as possible in light of these circumstances.

Unfortunately, we cannot be responsible for other expenses incurred like visa fees, inoculations, travel equipment, etc.

Will Wilderness Travel’s office be open over the next few weeks?

Due to a Bay Area “shelter in place” directive, our physical office in Berkeley, CA has been required to close from March 17-April 7. However, our staff is working remotely and will be able to assist you between our normal office hours of 8:30 am-5:00 pm (PST), Monday-Friday. Unfortunately, any refunds will not be processed until we have access to our physical office, hopefully beginning on April 8. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this unprecedented time.

What if my departure is canceled and I have already paid for my airfare?

Please work with your travel insurance company, travel agent, airline, or credit card company to see what options may be available to you. WT cannot be responsible for international airfare; however, in light of these unusual circumstances, many airlines have introduced new policies that allow you to cancel your flight and convert to a travel credit.

What should I do if I’m booked on a trip but I’m not sure if I should travel?

We understand that these are uncertain times, and have introduced more flexible cancellation policies for every trip to give you peace of mind and more time to cancel a trip without penalty as we monitor how this situation evolves.

If you are unsure whether to travel due to health concerns, we recommend you consult with your physician. We also highly recommend purchasing CFAR (Cancel for any Reason) insurance.

Please email your Trip Specialist or give us a call at 1-800-368-2794 if you have any questions about the policies specific to your trip and the region you are visiting. Ultimately, if we do not cancel a trip, the decision to travel is up to you.

If I book a new trip, what are your updated cancellation and transfer policies?

We have always prided ourselves on having the most generous cancellation policy in the industry—a 100% refund up to 91 days before departure on most trips. However, in order to give you peace of mind during this time, we have worked diligently with our partners around the world over the past weeks to offer an even more flexible cancellation policy. For all new sign-ups from March 13-June 1, 2020, we are now able to offer:

  • Up to 75 days before departure – 100% refund
  • 46-74 days before departure – Any standard cancellation fees will be converted to a future trip credit
  • 31-45 days before departure – 100% credit to a future trip

*Updated cancellation and transfer policies apply to all Small Group Adventures through December 31, 2020. Certain Special Events, Private Journeys, and boat-based journeys may have a somewhat different policy.
