Douglas Gilbert

Douglas has spent more than 35 years in conservation roles in the Scottish Highlands, Northumberland, The Peak District, and the Hebrides. He's interested in all things pertaining to natural history, including human relationships to nature. When not guiding, Douglas enjoys canoeing, sea kayaking, birding, and biking, and claims to be a beach bum at heart. He's also a standing stone enthusiast and is fascinated by place names—where they originate and what stories they have to tell.

Client Testimonials

"Doug was fantastic. His knowledge of local flora and fauna was excellent, and his knowledge of the geology and Gaelic language/history gave meaning to our experience. His care and concern for each of his 'clients' was above par. He worked hard every day for us and always had a smile and a kind word. "

"Doug was a wonderful guide. I appreciated his extensive knowledge of the natural environment (birds, plants, trees, and wildlife). He was a pleasure to be with and had a fun, light-hearted sense of humor. I also appreciated his knowledge of Scottish history, culture, and current events and his ability to share his knowledge with us. I also appreciated his willingness and desire to seek out additional activities and attractions, which were not on the itinerary, such as a local bagpiper who came to play for us in Tarbert."
