England
Wilderness Travel offers four different guided tours of England, each of which combines walks through fairytale landscapes with cultural insider’s experiences. The main difference between each England itinerary is the region they explore—from a coast-to-coast adventure across three national parks to spectacular seaside rambles along Cornwall, the Jurassic Coast, and the Channel Islands. Some feature more adventurous hikes, others foodie deep dives—but in essence, each adventure reveals a different side of this varied, fascinating, and welcoming country.
Walk a renowned long-distance trail
When it comes to the ultimate English ramble, look no further than the iconic Coast to Coast Walk. The route traces 190 miles across three national parks from the Irish Sea to the North Sea, with stops in stone-walled villages, lively pubs, and historic inns. While walking its entirety would involve hiking 12 to 16 miles a day for 12 to 14 days, our experience condenses it into six- to eight-mile days for just 12 days, complete with a support van to shuttle bags in between (and allow for travelers to skip hiking days if desired). This is our more challenging England adventure, but there’s nothing quite like the sense of achievement at the end—and partaking in traditions like throwing a stone you picked up at the start into the North Sea at the end!.
Stroll seaside in England’s breathtaking south
This adventure stands out among our others for the way it links together disparate time periods, cultures, and landscapes, offering an exciting way to experience this beautiful corner of the country. We’ll pair the classic with the enchanting, visiting famed Stonehenge, Dorset’s enigmatic Jurassic Coast (a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site), and the charming Channel Islands, which have a special fusion of French and English cultures. Compared to our other England itineraries, this is our least challenging, with seaside strolls and pastoral walks rather than strenuous hikes.
This tour is an incredible introduction to both the country’s natural and cultural wonders. And by culture, we mean myth and lore, for the spectacular coasts of Cornwall are awash with tales of mermaids, pixies, and ghostly galleons that will feature prominently on this exciting walk along the Cornish Coastal Path. While this is a hiking-based journey, we take it slow, spending three to four nights at every hotel. We also immerse ourselves in each stop and unpack the local culture, like we do at Tintagel, mythical home of King Arthur and his knights. This is also the trip to book for foodies—an unexpected highlight for most WT travelers!
For travelers who prefer to engage with a destination through its people, look no further than this idyllic journey across the Cotswolds and into Wales. Along the most spectacular stretches of England’s Cotswolds Way and Wales’s Pembrokeshire Coast Path, we’ll meet with their many characters: a prized cheesemaker near the wool village of Wotton-under-Edge, a local storyteller who continues this ancient Welsh tradition, a historian of Dylan Thomas at the poet’s home in the coastal village of Laugharne. In addition, expect special experiences at our lovely hotels, from incredible meals to unforgettable activities (falconry at a castle-hotel, anyone?). This journey is ideal for travelers who love exploring a destination on foot, but are looking for easier hikes and a lot of history.
