Raja Ampat: Snorkeling in an Underwater Paradise

A blue wooden sailing boat with two masts floats on calm, reflective water near a lush, green forested shoreline under a partly cloudy sky—an inviting scene in Raja Ampat, renowned for its underwater paradise and exceptional snorkeling.

The world feels smaller with each passing day—not because of its size, but of the dwindling possibility of discovering new places. Yet, imagine a destination so remote that merely reaching it becomes an adventure. Picture a land where reality surpasses even the highest expectations: an undersea realm teeming with fantastical creatures, where time is measured not in hours or minutes but in extraordinary moments. This is Raja Ampat—a name that evokes the magic of a dream, and a place I’ve wanted to visit for more than a decade.

My dream became a reality in October and November of 2025, when my wife and I joined Wilderness Travel’s Snorkeling Raja Ampat adventure. I seized the opportunity to immerse myself in a world of dazzling marine life and crystal-clear waters.

How to Get to Raja Ampat, Indonesia

For my trip, the journey itself was an odyssey through evocative places: Singapore, Jakarta, West Papua, Sorong. The lengthy route to Raja Ampat included a 17-hour flight from Los Angeles to Singapore, a 90-minute flight to Jakarta, and five more hours to Sorong.

View of scattered green islands in a calm, blue sea under a partly cloudy sky with sunlight reflecting off the water—an underwater paradise in Raja Ampat, perfect for snorkeling adventures.

Despite the long flights, the discomforts of travel faded upon seeing our liveaboard boat for the next 12 days, a 105-foot Indonesian schooner, that would bring us into the heart of Raja Ampat.

A Day-by-Day Guide to Snorkeling Raja Ampat

For 12 blissful days, we settled into a routine—if such a word could apply to life in paradise. Each morning began with a made-to-order breakfast including yogurt, granola, fresh fruit, and eggs any style along with coffee and tea, followed by a boat ride to a new snorkel site.

After a brief orientation, we enjoyed a two-hour snorkel led by the trip and dive leaders. Returning to the boat, we had lunch and perhaps a nap, before another snorkeling adventure in the afternoon. Freshly baked snacks along with fried bananas and veggie fritters (a delicious treat) awaited us afterward, sometimes followed by another nap—because even paradise can be demanding!

A large, two-masted ship anchored on calm water at sunset near the hills and mountains of Raja Ampat, an underwater paradise perfect for snorkeling adventures.

Evenings featured fascinating slideshows presented by the trip leader, a delicious dinner served buffet-style with three entrée options, a preview of the next day’s adventures, and finally, a restful sleep aboard our boat.

Some days, we enjoyed land excursions, including visiting some of the locals and hiking in the tropical forest.

Calling these 12 days a “routine” hardly does them justice. Rather than monotony, every day and every dive brought something new and unforgettable. Many in our group had traveled and snorkeled globally, and all agreed that Raja Ampat was the best of the best.

Departing was like waking from a beautiful dream. I wished the trip had lasted longer. Raja Ampat held so much more to explore, and our time there felt all too brief. As with all dreams, you hope to revisit them and hold onto the hope that one day, you’ll find another paradise—just like Raja Ampat.
