Invitation to Explore Kyrgyzstan

Join Wilderness Travel’s beloved Trip Leader Hashmat Singh on this hiking and cultural adventure to Kyrgyzstan’s spectacular “Celestial Mountains.”

Dear Adventurers:

I still remember my excitement as I took my first flight to Kyrgyzstan, flying over the imposing Himalaya, Karakorum, and eventually over the Tien Shan mountain ranges, over giant pieces of turquoise (or so the giant lakes seemed like from 37,000 feet up in the air). How lucky I was to see such vast beauty spread out below me and feel the excitement of a foray into new territories.

Two traditional yurts stand side by side on a grassy plain with a lake and snow-covered mountains in the background under a clear sky.

Since then, I have been fortunate to lead several departures of WT’s Kyrgyzstan: Hiking in the Celestial Mountains, a fantastic itinerary that takes us deep into the mountains, to pristine valleys, and with overnights at stunningly beautiful campsites.

Several tents set up on a grassy area near a forested mountain range, with smoke visible from a campfire. Tall pine trees and rocky terrain surround the campsite.
Two individuals in green shirts are riding horses on a grassy field, with reddish rock formations in the background—a perfect scene to explore Kyrgyzstan.

The hikes on the trip are modest and the camping is quite luxurious as we experience Kyrgyzstan’s nomadic culture, meet the people, and learn about their way of life, their food, their music, their traditions, and their high meadows full of grazing animals. As I returned again and again, I’ve discovered a people so proud of their heritage and so welcoming that now I’m hooked for life!

A group of hikers with backpacks descends a grassy hillside, overlooking a valley with forested areas and distant mountains under a partly cloudy sky—an invitation to explore Kyrgyzstan's breathtaking landscapes.
A group of people sits on hay bales, facing a stage with three performers in traditional attire in front of a decorated yurt, set in a grassy, mountainous landscape under a clear blue sky—an invitation to explore the cultural richness of Kyrgyzstan.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Kyrgyzstan came out of its shell, and recently, the country has made major developmental strides, with new roads connecting far reaches of the country across the high mountain landscape that they share with Tibet. Now, in a land where Silk Road travelers once passed through on their camels, we can travel by comfortable 4WD vehicles.

Several individuals work together to construct a large, circular yurt outdoors on a sunny day, capturing the spirit of travel as they explore Kyrgyzstan's rich traditions.
Two children wearing traditional hats sit on the grass, with one holding a stick, engaged in conversation outdoors—a delightful scene that encapsulates the charm of Kyrgyzstan tourism.

The highlights of this trip are so innumerable it’s difficult to list them all, but here are a few: towering peaks and glacial lakes, pristine alpine valleys, eagle hunters, horse games, spice and vegetable markets, yurts in nomadic camps, a simple and delicious cuisine, and people with the biggest and most welcoming smiles.

A group of people sits in a circular arrangement inside a traditional yurt in Kyrgyzstan, sharing a meal placed on a low table. Various utensils and items are visible in the background, inviting you to explore the rich culture and hospitality of this Central Asian gem.
A group of people hike towards a large, red rock formation under a blue sky with scattered clouds, exploring Kyrgyzstan's breathtaking landscapes.

And the best part is that few travelers venture here, but that’s going to change very soon. I hope you will join me for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure in an under-the-radar mountain paradise.

Two people walk along a rocky path beside a flowing river, surrounded by tall pine trees and mountainous terrain under a cloudy sky. This serene scene is an open invitation to explore Kyrgyzstan, where nature's beauty offers an unparalleled experience in tourism.
A bearded man in hiking gear and a cap stands on a rocky mountain trail, with snow-capped peaks of Kyrgyzstan in the background. This scene might as well be an invitation to explore one of the world's most breathtaking landscapes.
