Hiking the Real Portugal: An Invitation From Your Expert Guide
Dear Adventurer,
Portugal is having a moment, and for good reason. But what I’d love to share with you isn’t the Portugal you see in photos. It’s the real Portugal: wild landscapes, quiet trails, unforgettable meals, and the kind of authenticity you only discover on foot.
For over a decade, I’ve refined this journey with clear goals: to bring travelers to Portugal’s most remarkable places, away from the crowds, while maintaining comfort, excellent logistics, and one-of-a-kind experiences. Today, this itinerary is one of the projects I’m most proud of.
What to expect on this hiking journey through the heart of Portugal
Our 10-day journey begins in Porto and traces an extraordinary route through the heart of Portugal. Our travels show us the dramatic mountain scenery of Serra da Estrela, Belmonte’s deep Jewish heritage, the prehistoric rock engravings of Foz Côa, the legendary Douro Valley, the wild beauty of Peneda-Gerês National Park, and the green, pastoral landscapes of Minho, before we return once again to Porto.
By the end of the journey, many travelers tell me it feels as though they’ve experienced the whole country in one carefully designed loop. You’ll see it all with a highly experienced, well-coordinated team that has worked together for years, ensuring everything runs smoothly and comfortably.
Hiking at its best—and at your rhythm
This is a level 3+ hiking adventure: challenging, but deeply rewarding. Many of the trails we walk are little-known and often we hike in near solitude, surrounded by mountain ridges, rivers, and forests that feel timeless and villages that still move at their own pace.
At the same time, this journey is thoughtfully designed to allow flexibility. With designated exit points and close coordination with our support vehicle, it’s possible to hike less on certain days if needed without affecting the group experience or the rhythm of the trip. Comfort, safety, and enjoyment are always priorities.
Hiking the Douro Valley
One of my favorite moments on the journey takes place in the Douro Valley. After hiking above terraced vineyards, we enjoy lunch overlooking the river followed by a private ride on a traditional boat through the heart of Port wine country.
It’s not just about seeing the Douro—it’s about experiencing it as an insider in a way that feels personal, unrushed, and deeply connected to the land and its people. And taking a boat ride in the Douro is one of the best things to do in Portugal.
Hiking Peneda-Gerês
Peneda-Gerês National Park offers a completely different kind of magic. With careful timing and deep local knowledge, we explore granite peaks, mountain streams, and panoramic viewpoints in a way that preserves the park’s wild, quiet character. Encounters with wild horses are not uncommon, and silence often becomes part of the experience.
In a world where special places are increasingly crowded, this sense of space and stillness feels incredibly rare.
Excellent food & wine
I truly believe that great hiking deserves great food. Along the way, we take real care with every meal, whether that means enjoying traditional Portuguese cuisine, lighter options, or thoughtfully adapted meals for specific dietary needs.
We also pass through three of Portugal’s most important wine regions, and for those who are interested, we enjoy carefully selected regional wines that complement the journey. And if wine isn’t your focus there are always excellent alternatives—this trip is about enjoyment, never obligation.
Encounters with local communities
What truly makes this journey special goes beyond landscapes and logistics. It’s the connection—between travelers, and between travelers and the local communities who welcome us along the way.
Over time we’ve built genuine relationships in the places we visit, and you can feel it. One traveler once laughed and said, “The guides even know the dogs by name.” It’s true. Even Leão, the beloved dog at the Count of Calheiros’ estate, has become part of the story.
In the end it’s these moments, shared meals, quiet trails, laughter at the end of a long hike, that stay with people long after the journey ends.
If this sounds like your kind of adventure, I would love to welcome you to Portugal. It has a special way of staying in the hearts of those who walk through it.
Warm regards,
David Monteiro
