Experience all of Africa in one country! Our wonderfully active journey explores the very best of South Africa and its diverse landscapes. Hiking adventures bring you through the vineyards of wine country, where the views are as refreshing as the lovely vintages, into phantom fern forests and along the coast of the spectacular Garden Route (with oyster tasting in a harbor village), and to “hanging spear” waterfalls and ancient Bushman rock paintings in the craggy Drakensbergs of Zulu country. Our grand finale is a safari in one of the most exclusive private reserves in the world, Timbavati, part of famed Greater Kruger National Park. Explorations here are on foot and by open vehicle, giving us the chance for incredible sightings of lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo, the legendary “Big Five.”

What the Trip is Like

The trip is rated Level 2+, easy to moderate. This is a luxury hotel-and-lodge-based adventure tour with several days of walking and hiking. Some of the hikes could be considered a bit strenuous, but there are easier walking options available. Although this is not a particularly rigorous trip, we still recommend that each participant undertake a preparatory program of physical conditioning. Daily walking or regular hiking, jogging, stair-climbing, and so forth are excellent preparatory exercises.

During drives, we can at times get quite close to wild animals. Being very quiet improves everybody’s chances of observation. In the interest of safety, your Trip Leader explains limitations on movement while on game drives, in the safari vehicles, and around camp. Incidents with wild animals are extremely rare on safaris, but no camping safari can guarantee immunity from such incidents. Wilderness Travel is not to be held responsible for incidents involving the behavior of wildlife.
