Montusi Mountain Lodge
Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa
With one of the most splendid settings in the northern Drakensberg Mountains (near the entrance to Royal Natal National Park), Montusi has unrivaled views of the Drakensberg, including its famous Amphitheater escarpment. The word "montusi" is the Anglicized version of the Zulu term "mountain in the mist" and until the 1990s, Montusi was a farm. Today it is a serene and welcoming lodge with thatch-roofed cottages set among gardens. Each cottage has a large bedroom, sitting room, fireplace, and shaded patio for relaxing. The lodge is family-owned, with the owners on site to greet us, and the friendly staff is mostly from the local Zulu community. Breakfasts and lunches are served on an open-air patio with views across the native gardens and rolling green lawns to the towering Drakensberg.
