In this spectacular realm of natural beauty and ancient cultures, we examine the intricate Inca stonework at Pisac, a temple-fortress clinging to a mountain spur, and visit atmospheric Chinchero, built on Inca foundations and home to an acclaimed artisan market. In the early morning, when the light is dramatic and there are fewer visitors, we explore the astounding Inca fortress at Ollantaytambo and the quaint 13th century town below it, which still has its original Inca town plan. With three full days in this celebrated valley, we have ample time to savor the awe-inspiring Inca sites and explore the best artisan markets. We'll also be welcomed at a wonderfully remote village for a pachamanca (a variety of meats and vegetables slow-cooked over hot stones in the ground). Generations of WT's renowned Inca Trail crew and porters live in the village and it has a strong heritage of artisan weaving. We finish with a grand overnight stay at the renowned Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, just steps from the ruins, which gives us fantastic access. Our cultural connections in Peru go back 45+ years, and our Trip Leaders are superb natural teachers.

Cultural and walking tours of 2-3 hours, elevations from 11,200 feet in Cusco to 13,779 feet in an Andean village
https://s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com/wildernesstravel/trips/thumb-SACREDMP-quechua-weaver-loom-colorful-woven-tapestry-sacred-valley-cusco-peru.jpg
"ThisYear_PriceDetails2":"
Single supplement: $1,895

6695","SingleSupplementPrice1":"0","SingleSupplementPrice2":"0","SingleSupplementPrice1Caption":"","SingleSupplementPrice2Caption":"
0
","FeePrice1":"0","FeePrice2":"0","FeePrice3":"0","FeeName1":"","FeeName2":"","FeeName3":"
"NextYear_PriceDetails2":"
Single supplement: $2,085

6695","SingleSupplementPrice1NextYear":"0","SingleSupplementPrice2NextYear":"0","NextYearSingleSupplementPrice1Caption":"","NextYearSingleSupplementPrice2Caption":"

0","NextYearFeePrice1":"0","NextYearFeePrice2":"0","NextYearFeePrice3":"0","NextYearFeeName1":"","NextYearFeeName2":"","NextYearFeeName3":
Arrive early in the morning at the airport in Lima and connect with a spectacular flight over the Andes to Cusco (11,200'). Upon arrival, we are met and transferred to the acclaimed Hotel Monasterio, set right near the Plaza de Armas. Here we drink a cup of maté de coca (the local herb tea) to help us acclimatize to the high altitude, and take deep breaths! Lunch is on your own. In the afternoon, we enjoy a walking tour through central Cusco for a glimpse into the ceremonial heart of the Inca Empire. Our walk includes a visit to the Coricancha, a sacred Inca temple whose walls were once covered with sheets of gold, Plaza de Armas, and the baroque cathedral, built on the site of an old Inca palace. We gather for a Welcome Dinner this evening at one of Cusco's innovative restaurants.

Note: We recommend coming to Cusco one day early to acclimatize to Cusco's altitude. An extra day makes a world of difference after the long flight from the US. We are happy to book additional nights for you at the Hotel Monasterio (an “on your own” expense).

Cusco: Inhabited by proto-Incas as early as the 12th century AD, Cusco was completely rebuilt in the early 15th century by Pachacuteq, the Inca warrior king. He is credited with creating the Incas' form of worship, system of government, and the distinctive masonry style we still marvel at today. Cusco was the heart of Tahuantinsuyo, the Land of the Four Quarters, as the Incas called their kingdom. The boundary lines of each quarter of the kingdom originated from the main plaza. An elegant imperial city, Cusco was laid out in the shape of a puma. The great fortress of Saqsayhuaman formed its head, while palaces, temples, squares, and streets formed the puma's body and legs. Cusco's paved avenues were flanked by temples, and there were rock-hewn palaces with gold- and jewel-encrusted doors and villas for the brilliantly clad Inca nobles and their retinues. The capital's opulent inner sanctum was the Coricancha, or House of the Sun, once a glittering temple to the gods, full of golden statues (today it forms the foundation for the colonial Santo Domingo church). Although the Spaniards looted the gold and silver from the elaborate Inca temples, most of Cusco remained undisturbed after Pizarro, the Spanish conqueror, made his triumphant entrance into the city in 1533. But in 1536, Manco II, the rebel Inca, led an attack against the Spanish. His men used slingshots to rain hot coals into the city, setting it ablaze. The Spanish triumphed, but the once-glorious city was left a smoking ruin.
This morning we visit awe-inspiring Saqsayhuaman, the majestic Inca fortress overlooking Cusco. With its three tiers of outer walls made of massive and perfectly fitted limestone blocks, it is the largest and one of the most impressive Inca sites in existence. The zig-zag configuration of its walls may indicate that it was a temple dedicated to the Inca's important lightning god, although some scholars feel the zig-zags represent the teeth of a puma. Our explorations also include the Inca spring at Tambo Machay and the off-the-beaten-path Temple of the Moon. Pisac was the largest fortress-city complex of the Incas, yet it is another enigma to archaeologists. It was a classic Inca pucara, a huge defended area into which the entire population of a wide area could retreat during a military threat. But despite its natural defenses, the Incas made no stand here against the Spaniards. The fine Inca terraces of Pisac are still cultivated by local inhabitants, and the terracing exhibited here reflects a level of engineering ingenuity unrivaled anywhere else. With its high-status temple architecture and elaborate visual design, Pisac may have been a royal estate or a ceremonial center like Machu Picchu. After lunch, we set out on a two-hour hike to one of the oldest known Inca cemeteries, where tombs are set into caves in the high cliffs. We then continue to the colonial town of Maras and begin our downhill hike past ancient salt mines where a natural saline spring flows into hundreds of terraced pools. This breathtaking site is still the main salt supply for the Cusco area, as it was in pre-Hispanic times. After a picnic lunch, we visit the quaint village of Chinchero, where there is a large colonial church built directly on top of Inca walls, and walk through the extensive archaeological site that was believed to have been the palace of Topa Inca Yupanqui, the tenth Inca king. We'll enjoy our lunch at the lodge, then head out for a full afternoon of exploring Machu Picchu's reconstructed ruins of staircases, altars, temples, and fountains. Overnight at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge.
Walking Time: Approximately 5 hours

Machu Picchu: So well hidden in the jungle-covered ramparts of the Cordillera Vilcabamba that the Spaniards never knew of it, Machu Picchu allows us a glimpse into the Inca world. American historian Hiram Bingham, who had a fascination with Peruvian archaeology, found the site in 1911 while searching for the ruins of Vilcabamba, known to be the last place where the rebel Manco II took refuge. A villager told Bingham about some ruins on a high ridge above the Urubamba River and led him there; thus, Bingham found the ruins not of Vilcabamba, but of a mysterious Inca city now believed to be one of the royal estates of the 9th Inca king, Pachacuti—whose name translates as “Transformer of the World.” Pachacuti was a kind of New World Alexander the Great, whose son and grandson continued and consolidated the expansion of Inca power. Bingham returned in 1912 and 1915 to undertake the difficult task of clearing the thick forest that had engulfed the ruins. Peruvian archaeologist Luis Valcarcel undertook further studies and vegetation clearing in 1934, and in 1940 and 1941, a Peruvian-American expedition led by Paul Fejos did more study. Archaeologists know that Machu Picchu was built, occupied, and then abandoned in the course of 100 years. The Palace of Princesses, Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Condor, and the astronomical observatory are only a few of the remarkable restored ruins here. The many beautiful altars, terraces, fountains, and mysterious chambers all display intricate stonework. Discoveries in the 1980s of many other small ruin sites close to Machu Picchu have given weight to the theory that Machu Picchu also served as the administrative center of a huge and populous region. Whatever Machu Picchu's purpose was, it is certainly one of the most stunning archaeological sites in the world.
We awake early for our 7:00 am entry into the ruins and enjoy an optional hike during the cool, dawn hours to the top of Huayna Picchu, the striking peak directly behind the sanctuary. Welcome to Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, now a World Heritage Site. We'll acclimatize to the altitude as we examine some of Cusco's impressive Inca sites, including majestic Saqsayhuaman, with its three tiers of outer walls made of massive and perfectly fitted limestone blocks. Our city walks include a visit to the Coricancha, a sacred Inca temple whose walls were once covered with sheets of gold, and the city's baroque cathedral, built on the site of an old Inca palace. We'll also roam the cobbled lanes of the San Blas district, home to artisans since the time of the Incas. Overnights are at the historic Hotel Monasterio, a converted 15th century monastery.

In the stunning Sacred Valley, sculpted by Inca-built agricultural terracing, we examine the Inca stonework at Písac, a temple-ruin clinging to a mountain spur. The fine Inca terraces of Pisac are still cultivated by local inhabitants and the terracing exhibited here reflects an unrivalled level of engineering ingenuity. We'll visit the village of Chinchero, where there's a large colonial church built directly on top of Inca walls. This quaint village is also home to a legendary artisan market. Other explorations take us on walks along the enigmatic Inca terraces of Moray and to the natural saline springs above the colonial village of Moray. Our overnights in the Sacred Valley are in the luxurious Tambo del Inka, a relaxing hideaway on the banks of the Rio Urubamba.

In the early morning, when the light is dramatic and there are fewer visitors, we explore the Inca fortress at Ollantaytambo and the charming 13th century town below it, which still has its original Inca town plan. We'll also visit a wonderfully remote village where we're hosted for a traditional pachamanca (meat and vegetables slow-cooked over hot stones in the ground). Generations of WT's renowned Inca Trail crew and porters live in this village and we know many of the families as long-time friends.
An early morning ride on the Vistadome train brings us to Machu Picchu for our unforgettable overnight stay at the Sanctuary Lodge, right at the gates of this indescribable Inca city. We'll enjoy our lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge, then head out for a full afternoon of exploring Machu Picchu's reconstructed ruins of staircases, altars, temples, and fountains. Many travelers rush in and out of here in a few hours, but our overnight stay gives us easy access for multiple entries to the ruins with our specialist guide, including a sunrise visit and chance to climb Huayna Picchu, the striking peak directly behind the sanctuary. Depart via Cusco on Day 8.

    Accommodations

Listed below are our signature accommodations for this trip. Although it is highly unlikely, we may make substitutions when necessary.

    Hotel Monasterio

    Days 1-2 (2 nights)

A 16th century monastery that is now an elegant hotel, the Monasterio has a stunning historic ambiance, with several inner courtyards, a chapel, wonderful furnishings, and antique paintings and carpets. The grand lobby bar, warmed by a fireplace, is a great place to sit and unwind at the end of a busy day. The hotel also has a great location just steps from the Plaza de Armas. As with any historic building, the guest rooms vary in size and configuration, but all are well appointed. This hotel even offers to pump oxygen into guest rooms to help acclimatization to Cusco's high altitude! The Monasterio is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World.

    Tambo del Inka

    Days 3-5 (3 nights)

With its riverside location, lush park-like grounds, and wonderfully appointed rooms, this hotel is a little bit of luxury in the heart of the Sacred Valley. The views of the surrounding mountains are superb, and the pool and sauna are a great place to unwind after a day of exploring. Sip a drink around the cozy stone fireplace, then get ready for a delicious meal. Got some extra time? The spa offers a variety of soothing treatments.

    Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge

    Day 6 (1 night)

You can't get closer to the Machu Picchu ruins than this! With only 31 rooms, this property is famously set right at the gate of Machu Picchu. Not only does this save you from having to make the 30-minute bus trip to get up to or back from the ruins each day, but it also allows you the luxury of popping back to the hotel for a rest or a bite to eat whenever you like throughout the day. The hotel features a garden with a view of Huayna Picchu, two restaurants, and the food and service are wonderful. While the rooms are small and few offer views of the ruins, the Sanctuary remains the absolute top choice of travelers who decide that if they are only going to do it once, they might as well do it right!

    Hotel Monasterio

    Day 7 (1 night)

A 16th century monastery that is now an elegant hotel, the Monasterio has a stunning historic ambiance, with several inner courtyards, a chapel, wonderful furnishings, and antique paintings and carpets. The grand lobby bar, warmed by a fireplace, is a great place to sit and unwind at the end of a busy day. The hotel also has a great location just steps from the Plaza de Armas. As with any historic building, the guest rooms vary in size and configuration, but all are well appointed. What the Trip is Like

This trip is rated Level 2, Easy to Moderate, according to our trip grading system. Cultural explorations are the focus of the trip, with hotel accommodations throughout. Much of the trip takes place at higher altitudes, ranging from 11,200 feet in Cusco to 13,779 feet in the Andean village of Patacancha, where we enjoy a traditional feast. Overland travel is by van.

    Review Trip Level Details

While this is not a hiking trip per se, it is still a very active trip with good portions of each day spent exploring Cusco and small villages, on short hikes in the adjoining countryside, and with time spent investigating Inca ruin sites, which always involves climbing up and down steps along rough pathways.

Note on optional hike up Huayna Picchu: On Day 7, you will have the opportunity to climb Huayna Picchu, the spectacular peak rising from the ruins. This hike is quite rewarding but not for the faint of heart or those with a fear of heights. The climb is steep, a bit of a scramble, and can be slippery. It's suitable for very fit hikers who like a challenge. Think stairmaster at the highest level!

For maximum enjoyment of the trip (and the wonderful scenery, food, and history that are a part of it), you must be in fit shape and ready to walk. We strongly urge you to train for the trip with regular exercise.

Being so close to the equator, Peru has only two climate seasons: a dry season from April to October, and a wet season from December to March. For hiking in the mountains, the April to October season is ideal; the countryside is green and lush, the skies are often blue and sunny, and the mountain vistas are at their clearest and most magnificent.

Altitude is the main factor controlling the climate. In the mountains, you'll encounter sunny days with daytime temperatures ranging between 65°F and 70°F degrees, dropping to the 40s°F and lower at night. The sun is very strong at high altitude and it can often be warm enough to hike in shorts and a t-shirt. However, it can also get extremely cold; if you're familiar with mountain weather, you know how suddenly it can get cold even in the daytime if the sun slips behind a cloud. Nighttime temperatures can drop to below freezing. Rain should not be a problem on our hikes, but always keep in mind that mountain weather is unpredictable and sudden storms can occur, especially on high mountain passes. The best preparation for the changeable climate of the high Andes is to dress in layers.

Lima lies in a coastal desert where rainfall is rare and temperatures are usually warm (70s°F and 80s°F). Days are overcast most of the year due to the Humboldt current that comes up from Antarctica and meets the warm, tropical El Nino current from the north to create the garua, or coastal fog/mist.

The climate in the Amazon Basin is generally warm and humid throughout the year but can also be unexpectedly cool (usually 60s°F) due to the breezes that blow down from the Andes.

    Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

    Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

    Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

    Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

    Level 6 – Very Strenuous

Full-day hikes (5-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Most hikes take place at altitudes above 10,000 feet, with some days ascending as high as 18,000 feet.

"Custom_What_the_Trip_is_Like_-_Header_1":"","Custom_What_the_Trip_is_Like_-_Text_1":"","Custom_What_the_Trip_is_Like_-_Header_2":"","Custom_What_the_Trip_is_Like_-_Text_2":"","Custom_Trip_Level_Note_1":"","Custom_Trip_Level_Note_2":"

Adventure travel often involves exotic destinations, unusual loris of physical exertion, or activities you ma not have participated in previously.
