A Northern Arc Across Ireland

Hiking and Cultural Adventure from Donegal to Belfast

Trip Level

This trip is Level 3+, depending on the hiking options you choose. As we explore the varied landscapes of the north of Ireland, we will have a choice of hikes (either moderate or strenuous) most days, stretching over terrain that ranges from flat and boggy to rocky. You carry only a daypack with the essentials: rain gear, fleece sweater, water bottle, and camera. Weather is a dominant force in Ireland and will play a role in how the trip takes shape. The Trip Leaders keep the itinerary flexible to take advantage of local conditions and give you the best possible experience. We recommend you make a special effort to be in good physical condition in order to be able to fully enjoy the trip. Daily brisk walking and/or regular hiking (or using a stair-climbing machine at your gym) are excellent preparatory exercises.

Weather

The weather in Ireland has a fickle reputation and it is certainly possible to encounter rain and quite strong winds when hiking, even in summer. However, the weather changes quickly, making “sunshine and showers” a common forecast. These climatic conditions give the mountains great atmosphere and can add to the overall experience. They do, however, mean that you need to bring good raingear, including a waterproof jacket, waterproof above-the-ankle hiking boots, and waterproof rain pants.

Choosing the Right Trip

We work hard to help you choose the right trip for you, paying attention to your individual interests, abilities, and needs. If you have questions about the level of comfort or any of the activities described in this itinerary, please contact us.
