Discovering Peru and Bolivia

Historic Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Lake Titicaca, and the Salar de Uyuni with Andrea Heckman

Trip Level

This trip is rated Level 3, Moderate. It features sightseeing with day walks and hikes. There are also some long drives. We enjoy hotel and lodge accommodations throughout the trip. Please note that most of the trip takes place at considerable altitudes (between 10,500 and 13,000 feet, with one drive over a pass at 17,076 feet). Even just a walk up a flight of steps can make you feel a bit breathless. Appropriate time for rest and acclimatization is included in the itinerary, but for your own enjoyment of the trip, we recommend you make a special effort to be in good physical condition. A brisk 30- to 45-minute walk every other day over moderately steep terrain can do wonders for your conditioning. Also be sure to drink plenty of water when you’re at altitude, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Weather

Most of our journey takes place at moderate to high altitudes in the Andes. The days can be brilliantly sunny but nights are cold at altitude. In October, you can expect pleasant daytime weather with lots of sunny days and very little rain. Daily temperatures in Arequipa and Colca Canyon should be in the high 60s°F, dropping to the low 50s°F at night. On the Isla del Sol in Lake Titicaca and in La Paz, it will be in the mid-60s and colder at night, dropping to the low 40s. The Salar de Uyuni can have much colder nights (35°F or lower). Be sure to bring enough warm layers for these nights.
