Convento do Espinheiro

√Čvora, Portugal

Take a step into the past at this former church and convent steeped in legend. After an apparition of the Virgin Mary appeared in the area in 1400, an oratory was built in her honor, and a church and convent in 1458. For two centuries, it was visited by Portuguese and foreign royalty, then was eventually transformed into the lavish 92-room resort we see today. A stay here is a real delight—with its manicured gardens, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, fitness center, spa, and a wine bar where you can book a private wine tasting—you’re in for a wonderful stay. The renowned restaurants specialize in Alentejo cuisine, and you’ll have the option of joining a cooking class here.
