With its head in the clouds and its feet in the sea, the precipitous Amalfi Coast has long been exalted as the most dazzling coastline in all Europe. Across the blue Bay of Naples is seductive Capri, a sun-splashed jewel of an island soaring out of a sparkling sea. This superb adventure connects these two glorious settings with wonderful hikes between picturesque hilltop villages, seaside hamlets, and across a gorgeous countryside. You’ll watch mozzarella di bufala being made (and sample it, of course), visit a family-run olive oil farm for a tasting, explore the haunting remains of Herculaneum and the Doric temples of out-of-the-way Paestum, and hike on the rim of brooding Mt. Vesuvius, with its 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside and the sea. Our Italy Trip Leaders are simply the best, with a true passion for sharing their love of la bella Italia.

Days 1-3
Naples / Paestum / Ravello

Our adventures begin with a visit to Naples’ fine archaeological museum and the fascinating Roman city of Herculaneum, eerily preserved when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. After a visit to the majestic ruins of Paestum, with its Doric temples still conveying an exquisite grandeur, hike airy trails from top-of-the-world Ravello, with its stunning vistas of the shimmering blue Mediterranean.

Days 4-5
Sentiero degli Dei / Positano / Capri

The spectacular Sentiero degli Dei (“Pathway of the Gods”) is aptly named, and brings you past ancient stone huts and across terraced hillsides overlooking the sea. From Positano, with its brightly painted houses covered in bougainvillea, ferry to the storied isle of Capri. Our hikes here lead along stone-paved lanes to the ruins of imperial Roman villas and up to the summit of Mt. Salero, with its eye-popping vistas across the azure sea and of the famous gray spires of the Faraglioni Rocks, familiar from the many classic movies filmed on Capri.

Days 6-9
Sorrento Peninsula / Mt. Vesuvius

We roam the back streets of sunny Sorrento, visit an olive oil farm run by the same family since 1849, and enjoy a hike through lemon and walnut groves. Our last hike is along the crater rim of Vesuvius, the only active volcano on mainland Europe, followed by lunch and wine-tasting at a winery on its slopes. Depart on Day 9 via Naples.

What the Trip is Like

This trip is rated Level 3+, Moderate to Strenuous. Our town and country walking tour consists of day hikes of up to 4 hours over often hilly terrain with many ascending and descending staircases and stone steps. We will carry just a daypack with water bottle, sunscreen, camera, and anything else you want with you while on the trail. Our luggage is transported for us by van, so it is usually possible to ride in the van if you want to opt out of a day’s hiking. Please note that in Europe, the dinner hour is considerably later than what it is in the US. We do our best to secure early reservations for our groups, but most often the evening meal will be at 7:30 p.m. Although the rooms are not always of uniform or international size, our leaders always try their best to assign rooms in a fair way so that all participants experience an equal advantage throughout the trip as a whole.

Getting in Shape
For maximum enjoyment of the trip (and the wonderful scenery, food, wine, art and history that are a part of it), you must be in fit shape and ready to walk. We strongly urge you to train for the trip with regular hiking, especially over hills or rough terrain, running, swimming, bicycling or stair-climbing exercise. Your feet should be fully prepared, accustomed to long days in sturdy, well broken-in hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes.

Accommodations
One night is in a restored 18th century agriturismo (historic farmhouse). It is a charming but rustic farmhouse chosen for its proximity to the ruins of Paestum All the other nights are in comfortable 3- and 4-star hotels. Since they are often in historic buildings the rooms may not conform to the international standards you may be accustomed to in more cosmopolitan areas. Our leaders try their best to assign rooms in a fair way so that all participants experience an equal advantage throughout the trip as a whole. Single rooms can be requested, but are not always available, due to the limited space in some of our hotels. If you require a single room, please make the request as early as possible. European single rooms are often smaller than US singles.

Steven S., Ellicott City, MD A great balance among hiking time, sightseeing historical sites, museums, tours, eating! Carmen D., Daly City, CA The Trip Leaders, the venues, special off-the-beaten path restaurants—it was all wonderful. There were so many experiences that had that WT touch. Cathie B., Madison, WI Magical from start to finish. One of the other trip members had been on eight WT trips, and we can understand why. Stunning scenery, great local guides, and Trip Leaders who are thoroughly knowledgeable about the area, take care of every detail, and who must be “chemists” to so effectively meld a group of strangers into a team of supportive friends.
