In years past, the rulers of Rajasthan’s princely states designed their own royal coaches to serve as “palaces on wheels” and today, the tradition continues. India’s newest luxury train, the Royal Rajasthan on Wheels, provides deluxe, air-conditioned staterooms with panoramic windows, silk bedding, and a private bathroom with shower. The 80-passenger train has two comfortable lounges and two restaurants. Each rail car has its own khidmatgar, a personal attendant in traditional Rajput attire. By day, we leave the train’s “group tour” and head off with our own Wilderness Travel Trip Leader to explore. By night, the train covers the long desert distances, allowing us to wake up in a new magical fort city each day.
