Hashmat Singh
Hashmat Singh has led trips throughout the Indian sub-continent since 1985 and has guided exclusively for Wilderness Travel since 1990. He holds a BA in History from Delhi University and is a published photographer. Hashmat’s book, Trekking in the Himalaya (Roli Books, January, 2003), features his photographs and descriptions of treks from Ladakh in the western Himalayas to Bhutan in the east. A passionate traveler, Hashmat is one of our most beloved leaders and is instrumental in designing new adventures for us in Asia. The profession of Trip Leader combines a lot of his interests—hiking, exploring the mountains, photography, and meeting new people. “Travel makes us more broad-minded and open to new ways of thinking. For me, sometimes it is the small moments that make the trip—when the clouds part for a few seconds to show a glimpse of the sun setting on Everest, when a local villager invites us into his modest hut to offer us a cup of tea, or watching the schoolgirls dressed in their best at the closing ceremony of the Pushkar Fair—I could go on and on. Nowhere is this sense of exploration more fulfilled than in India, where even I come across unusual events at least once on every trip that are difficult for me to understand let alone explain.”

As always Hashmat organized a rich and full trip experience. Not only was he, as usual, an incredibly well organized and knowledgeable leader, but added to our experience by keeping away from the usual tourist crowds and arranging special events to entertain, relax, and teach us. He remains an ideal leader who deserves his superb reputation. We look forward to many more trips with him.Michel and Deborah Wugmeister
