Transylvanian Alps, Medieval Villages, and tales of Dracula

Mountains & Legends of Romania

Carving their way through Romania, the wild Carpathian Mountains create a rugged backbone for eastern Europe, especially in the Transylvanian Alps, Romania’s legend-filled heartland. On this hiker’s journey, we enjoy spectacular hiking opportunities in one of the most undisturbed mountain realms in all Europe. We also enjoy the tranquil beauty of a land where time stands still—shepherds tend their flocks, horse carts are more numerous than cars, and medieval villages retain their traditional character. Transylvania’s architectural treasures await us, too, including rural Saxon villages dating to the Middle Ages, the striking Baroque city of Brasov, stunning Castle Bran—legendary lair of Vlad the Impaler (Dracula)—and absolutely medieval Sighisoara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Romania’s most beautiful town.

Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-2
Sinaia / Bucegi Mountains

With steep limestone topography, the Bucegi Mountains provide some of the best hiking in Romania. From the mountain town of Sinaia, we head to the ridgetop for a panoramic hike in meadows ablaze with wildflowers, from grape ferns to edelweiss. In Sinaia town, we visit Peles Castle, one of the best-preserved royal palaces in Europe, the summer residence of Carol I, the first Hohenzollern king of Romania.

Days 3-4
Brasov / Transylvanian Alps

Medieval Brasov, with its wealth of Baroque architecture, is set at the foot of an ancient pass across the Carpathians. We stroll the cobbled streets of Brasov’s Old Town then hike in the peaks of the Postaravu Mountains, with lunch in a high mountain inn. In the Piatra Mare Mountains, we hike past the pestera de gheata (ice cave) to a beautiful waterfall. Overnights are in Poiana Brasov.

Days 5-6
Sighisoara / Castle Bran / Transylvanian Alps

In the old town of Bran, we visit the mysterious Castle Bran of Dracula fame, perched on a rocky bluff and looking just the way a vampire’s castle should. We also hike in the heartland of the Saxons, an ancient landscape of fortified villages built in the Middle Ages and dotted with unique Romanesque and early Gothic churches. Overnights are in charming Sighisoara, Romania’s most atmospheric medieval town. With its battlements and spires, it is an openair museum and a World Heritage Site.

Days 7-8
Sibiu

From 12th century Sibiu, with its intact defensive walls and well-preserved old Saxon homes, we hike into the foothills of the Cindrel Mountains, a remote region of the Transylvanian Alps.

Days 9-12
Fagaras Mountains / Bucharest

The craggy, spruce forested Fagaras Mountains are Romania’s highest peaks. We hike long-distance ridgetop trails that wind through a wild landscape of limestone outcrops and sparkling lakes. Two memorable overnights are in a beautiful mountain chalet. Return to Bucharest on Day 11 and depart Day 12.
