Great Hikes and Mountain Lodges of Banff and Yoho National Parks

Adventure in the Canadian Rockies

With spectacular days of hiking in majestic mountain scenery and evenings in cozy lodges where we can sip a glass of wine by the crackling warmth of a fireplace, this is the ideal way to enjoy the Canadian Rockies. In this northern world, treeline is at just 7,000 feet, so the sight of stupendous, jagged peaks is all around us as we explore the best trails of majestic Banff and Yoho National Parks. With a choice of either moderate or challenging hikes each day, we head high into alpine cirques amid tundra lakes, watch for moose, elk, and bighorn sheep, examine glacial icefalls, admire fields brimming with wildflowers, and find that every day on the trail in the Canadian Rockies brings new discoveries.

Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-2
Mount Engadine Lodge / Banff National Park

From Banff, we enjoy a fine warm-up hike in the wilderness at the southern boundary of Banff National Park. The next day, we hike up to the alpine reaches of Burstall Pass for amazing views of saber-sharp peaks in all directions. Overnights are at Mount Engadine Lodge, a superb mountain retreat with an outdoor hot tub and huge stone fireplace.

Days 3-4
Shadow Lake Lodge / Banff National Park

One of the world’s scenic treasures, Banff National Park is part of the UNESCO Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site. As we explore this famous nature sanctuary, we may be able to catch glimpses of moose, elk, bighorn sheep, mule deer, beaver, and black bear. We hike beneath some of the most famous peaks in Banff National Park right to the door of our backcountry retreat, Shadow Lake Lodge, accessible only on foot. This lakeside lodge was built in 1928 by the Canadian Pacific Railway and features private log cabins near mile-long Shadow Lake, with glacier-clad Mount Ball (10,926') towering above. The next day, one of our hiking choices takes us into alpine terrain at Ball Pass.

Days 5-7
Emerald Lake Lodge / Yoho National Park

A World Heritage Site on the western slope of the Rockies, Yoho National Park is named for the Cree word expressing wonder. This is a wondrous landscape, indeed, of towering glaciated summits and high rock walls traced by lacy waterfalls. From historic Emerald Lake Lodge, we set out for our grand finale—some of the most enjoyable hikes in the entire Canadian Rockies. Our choices include a hike through the cedar forests of Emerald Basin or an ascent to Emerald Glacier for panoramic vistas of the massive Yoho Valley. Depart via Calgary on Day 7.
