Best Places to Visit in February

It may be the shortest month of the year, but February is packed with amazing destinations to visit, including Tanzania during its famed “birthing season” when hundreds of thousands of calves are added to the savanna’s Great Migration to Iceland during the magical winter (think snowshoeing and searching for the northern lights) to Costa Rica’s ethereal cloud forests.

Check out the full list of our favorite February adventures.

A group of people hiking in Patagonia.

Patagonia

Journey to the “ends of the Earth” in the middle of Patagonia’s austral summer (our winter!) for epic hikes beneath sunny skies in world-famous Los Glaciares National Park, Paine National Park, and Tierra del Fuego. We’ve perfected our adventures with expert Trip Leaders and exclusive boutique estancias and lodges along the way.

Two zebras.

Tanzania

Tanzania offers some of Africa’s greatest bucket-list experiences, from epic trekking to Uhuru Peak to unforgettable wildlife viewing. February lands us in the heart of the green season as some 300,000 wildebeest and zebra calves are delivered in a span of just three weeks. The presence of these wobbly-kneed newborns draws predators like big cats and hyena.

Two travelers hiking by the Northern Lights.

Iceland

Looking for a magical winter experience? Journey to the land of fire and ice for thrilling days exploring Thingvellir National Park and snowshoeing over lava fields, and exciting nights searching for the northern lights and soothing soaks in mineral hot springs.

A tiger.

Central India

Central India’s lush forests shelter one of the last populations of wild tigers in the world, and February is a great time to search for this incredible species as the temperatures are still cool and the verdant landscape makes for striking photos. This time of year, we often spot tigresses with their cubs as they roam through the majestic national parks and reserves.

A traveler on a bridge in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica

From ethereal cloud forests to stunning beaches sequestered in pristine national parks, Costa Rica is a paradise for nature lovers. February is the height of the dry season, making it an ideal time to escape the cold and explore these world-famous parks and reserves including Monteverde Cloud Forest, Arenal Volcano National Park, and Tortuguero National Park.

Locals in Sri Lanka fishing.

Sri Lanka

Drier weather makes February a wonderful time to visit this tear-drop-shaped nation, and we go to all the best spots including the cool green highlands where its world-famous Ceylon tea is cultivated, Yala National Park, home to elephants and leopards, and colorful cultural festivals.

A couple hiking in Tasmania.

Tasmania

Adventure in a land of towering ferns, cascading waterfalls, and curious wildlife during the southern hemisphere’s drier summer months. We’ll experience Tasmania’s diverse landscapes including Cradle Mountain, a World Heritage Site, and Freycinet, Tasmania’s spectacular coastal reserve, and sample crisp wines and fresh-from-the-sea cuisine.

A woman in Sardinia.

Sardinia

For a truly unique winter getaway, immerse yourself in the culture and cuisine of Sardinia. We’ll hike in dramatic canyons, sample fantastic wine and local delicacies, and enjoy captivating Pagan festivals that take place in February, complete with colorful parades and masked dancers.

Happy kids in Laos.

Laos

Laos is a vibrant land of golden temples, colonial-era villas, and frangipani trees along the winding Mekong River, and February is one of the best times to visit for its cooler, drier weather. We visit its 15th century pagodas and boat along the Mekong River to a Buddhist pilgrimage site.
