Best Places to Visit in March

As we welcome spring in the northern hemisphere, Chile and New Zealand are showing off their fall foliage while Baja and the Galápagos see wildlife begin their nesting and calving season. It’s also the perfect time to travel to Morocco and Egypt when it’s cooler and less crowded.

Galápagos

The unique Galápagos Islands are a year-round destination, and March is a great time for snorkeling when the waters are warmer and calmer. On Isabela, for example, snorkelers at Punta Vicente Roca can find themselves surrounded simultaneously by penguins and tropical fish. Waved albatrosses and marine iguanas begin nesting during this month on Española and Fernandina.

New Zealand

March marks the beginning of autumn in New Zealand, as long sunny days linger and tourists dissipate. As you head south, you’ll notice the bourgeoning autumn hues. As with any activity in New Zealand, weather is often variable and has the final say, so be sure to bring your spirit of adventure!

Morocco

Spring in Morocco is absolutely magical, with lush, green countrysides and snow-capped High Atlas peaks. The Dades Valley is in vibrant bloom during this time, the crowds have thinned, and the weather along the coast range is cool and pleasant.

The gloriously long arctic light during March in Finland’s Lapland means adventures can continue well into the evening, and chances to see the northern lights during this season are high. Our adventures timed for March means perfect snowpack for snowshoeing, and generally stable weather.

Chile

From the volcano-dotted Lake District down to the sublime world of Patagonia’s Torres del Paine National Park, Chile’s diverse terrain is one of the scenic masterpieces of the planet. In March, our adventures in this multifaceted country are timed for the onset of the autumn season just as fall hues begin to peek through and the crowds have thinned.

In March, we journey to Ladakh just as the region has reawakened after the long, brutal winter months and the local towns and temples are back in full swing. The snow leopards are quite active at this time, the weather has stabilized, and the light is perfect for photos.

Bhutan

Spring is one of the most popular times to visit the Kingdom of Bhutan. The weather is warm and comfortable, the valleys lush and green, and the wildflowers are in bloom. We time our adventures to witness tsechu festivals, and March is the Paro Festival, complete with sacred dance-dramas performed by monks in beautiful monastery courtyards.

Ghana

Ghana has a hot, humid climate that seldom varies year-round, but March is a comfortable pocket to visit when the humidity dips and you won’t experience the torrential summer rains or chilly winter Sahara winds.

Baja

The nutrient-rich waters of Baja’s Sea of Cortez attract migrating grey whales in the winter months, and by March the calves are a little bit older and very curious—the perfect time to have an absolutely thrilling wildlife experience! The weather this month allows for excellent snorkeling and kayaking conditions.

Egypt

Ancient wonders await you in Egypt and March is a wonderful time to explore its iconic sites and remote temples when the crowds are few and the temperatures are comfortable. Thanks to Egypt’s desert climate, it can get quite cool in the evening, especially when on the Nile River.
