Overview

The vibrant cultures of southern Spain and Morocco share a common history, yet retain their own exotic character. Our adventure combining the magic of Spain with the mystery of Morocco features great Moorish architecture, dazzling historical sites, sumptuous cuisine, and wonderful hikes in a ravishingly beautiful countryside. From Còrdoba, Andalucia's most northerly province, we journey to passionate Sevilla, then to the striking pueblos blancos (“white villages”) of Ronda and Grazalema. Ferrying across the Straits of Gibraltar to the ancient Moroccan port of Tangier, we head up to the craggy Rif Mountains to meet the Berber people at the dramatic “blue” village of Chefchaouen, dating from the 13th century. Our grand finale finds us in amazing Fes, which writer Paul Bowles called an “enchanted labyrinth sheltered from time.”

In the handsome Moorish city of Córdoba, whose Old Quarter is a World Heritage Site, we explore on foot in a maze of ancient whitewashed alleys that open onto the loveliest tiled courtyards in all of Andalucia. Our explorations include the 1,200-year-old Mezquita, a masterpiece of Moorish architecture that was once the epicenter of religious life in Moorish Spain, and the Judería, the old Jewish quarter. In Sevilla, one of the jewels in the crown of Europe, with its jasmine-scented gardens and Moorish monuments, our visits include the beautiful Alcazar Palace. One evening we enjoy a flamenco show, and there's no better place in the world than Sevilla to experience it!
We explore 15th century Zahara, one of Andalucia's most striking pueblos blancos, set on a rocky outcrop with red-tiled houses nestled below a castle, then head to the flower-filled town of Grazalema for a hike in the magnificent Sierra de Grazalema. In superb Ronda, dramatically perched above a deep river gorge, we visit the old Moorish quarter and famous 18th century plaza de toros, Spain's very first bullring.
We take the ferry to fabled Tangier, Morocco, set on the Straits of Gibraltar. After a visit to the tumbling streets of the old medina, we drive up to the ancient village of Chefchaouen, strikingly Andalucian in flavor, with its vibrant azure buildings contrasting with the terracotta rooftops and red-walled casbah. We enjoy a wonderful morning hike to a local village and explore Chefchaouen's friendly souks.
Heading inland through rolling vineyards and olive groves, we visit the striking hilltown of Moulay Idriss, named for Morocco's most famous saint, and roam the romantic ruins of Volubilis, once Rome's provincial capital in Morocco. Our grand finale is in unforgettable Fes, whose renowned medina beckons with its mile-long network of souks, open-air cafes, courtyards, hammams (traditional steam baths), and gardens. Depart Fes on Day 12.

      What the Trip is Like

This trip is rated Level 2+, Easy to Moderate, according to our trip grading system. You will need to be comfortable hiking 7 miles a day and being on your feet for up to 5 hours a day. Trail conditions, weather, and the group's level of fitness can affect hiking times and pacing.

      Review Trip Level Details
The majority of our walks through towns and cities will be flat, but there will be some areas with older cobblestone streets and hills. Our two hiking days will be on dirt paths with a moderate level of difficulty, including some rocky sections with uneven footing. There are easier options available on both of these hiking days.
The weather in southern Spain and northern Morocco is notoriously unpredictable. In the early spring and late fall, daytime temperatures usually range between the mid-60s°F and the mid-70s°F, but there can be spikes up into the high 80s°F. The mountain mornings can be crisp, but the days are pleasant. This is generally not a rainy region, but cool breezes and showers can occur at any time.
Overnights are in elegant hotels, including a renovated 16th century palace and luxurious riads in Chefchaouen and Fez. The hotels have both comfortable amenities and historical significance, but please note that the rooms are not always of uniform or international size. Our leaders do their best to assign rooms in a fair way so that all participants experience an equal advantage throughout the trip as a whole. Single rooms can be requested but are not always available, due to the limited space in the hotels. If you prefer a single room, please make your request as early as possible.
The majority of our meals are eaten at local restaurants and at our hotels. We've chosen these restaurants to give you a flavor of the variety of delicious cuisine that both countries offer. Please note that in Spain, the dinner hour is considerably later than what it is in the US. We do our best to secure early reservations for our groups, but most often the evening meal will be at 8:00 pm.
Trip members are always free to skip a day's hike or activities and travel to the next destination in the support vehicle. On most days, a support vehicle will transport the group's luggage, so you only need to carry a daypack. Please note that we will take a 45 minute ferry ride from Spain to Morocco.

"It was a cultural delight with a Trip Leader who shared her enthusiasm and took everyone's concerns into consideration. We explored history, culture, food, and wine."

      Barbara L.

      Riverdale NY

"Of the trips I've taken with WT, Southern Spain and Morocco was definitely near the top. That's quite a compliment because it was competing with the Serengeti, Indochine, and the Turquoise Coast among others."

      Carol F.

      Palo Alto, CA

"This was the best trip I’ve ever taken. An amazing itinerary, beautiful hikes, fantastic WT guides and local guides, and delicious cuisine."

      Judith Kirklin,

      South Portland, ME

"I loved this trip. The approach of tracing Andalusia's themes through southern Spain, then down into Morocco, is enlightened."

      Kathy D.

      Norwalk, CT

"Great itinerary, excellent food, and hotels. The only drawback was that gluttony was too easy to participate in, but that would be my weakness, not the trip's!"

      Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

      Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

      Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

      Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

      Level 6 – Very Strenuous

Full-day hikes (5-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Most hikes take place at altitudes above 10,000 feet, with some days ascending as high as 18,000 feet.

Accompanied by an expert local guide, we begin our introduction to the Moorish world with a walking tour that includes the 1,200-year-old Mezquita, the Grand Mosque, a 9th century masterpiece of Moorish architecture that was the Mecca of the West when the Moors ruled Spain. When Córdoba was recaptured by King Ferdinand III of Castile in 1236, the Mezquita was Christianized and a grand cathedral was constructed within it. Surrounding the Mezquita is the Judería, the old Jewish quarter, a village of whitewashed houses on narrow lanes. We walk across the Roman Bridge of Córdoba, which spans the width of the Guadalquivir River. Originally, built in the 1st century BC, the bridge has expansive views on either side that lead into the heart of the city. In 1984, the historic center of Córdoba was made a World Heritage Site. The ancient houses of old Córdoba have some of the loveliest open-air courtyards in all of Andalucia, full of fountains and flower-festooned balconies, and we will visit many along our way. For our morning explorations, we are accompanied by a local expert as we visit Sevilla's most compelling sights, including the extraordinary Alcazar Palace, built for King Pedro the Cruel in the 1300s. It is the best remaining example of decorative Mudejar architecture, the unique style created by Moors working under Christian rule. Originally an Almohad citadel, the palace was the favorite residence of the Spanish kings for four centuries after the reconquest. Later we explore the Cathedral of Saint Mary and the romantic Barrio Santa Cruz district, an atmospheric white village of bubbling fountains, twisting alleyways, whitewashed mansions, flower-bedecked windows, and fragrant jasmine and orange trees in perfect keeping with the city's romantic atmosphere. After lunch on your own, the remainder of the afternoon is free for independent exploration. We suggest a climb up the interior staircase that leads to the top of La Giralda, Spain's highest tower and the symbol of Sevilla, peeking over the rooftops and visible throughout the city, or a visit to the Museo de Bellas Artes or Archivo General de Indias ("General Archive of the Indies"), with its rare documents including original maps of the New World. Or you can just relax around the rooftop pool at our hotel! This evening, we enjoy an authentic flamenco show in the Barrio Santa Cruz. Flamenco was born in Andalucia, and there's no better place in the world than Sevilla to experience it. You can grab a bite to eat before or after the show. Various ethnic groups—gypsies, Muslims, and Jews—came together to help each other during this period of persecution, and with the melding of these cultures, flamenco was born. Flamenco follows a basic structure but at its heart it is an improvised form like jazz. It refers to Morocco's old pre-20th century cities, many of them enclosed within defensive walls. A typical medina has several monumental gates through which it can be entered and a mosque at its heart. Medinas are separated into quarters according to social and commercial hierarchies. Each quarter usually has its own communal oven, hammam (bath), and grocery shop within its network of streets and alleys. Craftsmen work in the area of the medina known as the souk (market), often with separate souks for separate crafts. A casbah is a fortress-style building with crenellated towers. In rural Morocco, representatives of the ruler lived in and governed from casbahs.
Transfer to the Fes airport for morning departure. For higher quality images and the ability to use long lenses for closer wildlife pictures, a DSLR camera is well worthwhile, though heavier. Most digital cameras and phones have good video options, but you may want to consider a GoPro for a lightweight, waterproof option. Always practice ahead of time with new equipment and bring your manual with you. You may want to consider renting camera equipment for your trip from places such as borrowlenses.com. This is an especially good idea for renting large zoom lenses that you may need for just one trip. Adding their extra insurance fee to cover expensive equipment is recommended.

Camera Accessories
We recommend bringing at least two large capacity memory cards or a small digital storage unit (or tablet) to back up your photos, freeing space on your memory cards. Don't forget to bring a battery charger and a backup battery so one is always charged and ready to use. For trips where you may be away from power sources for multiple days, consider looking into a solar-powered battery charger or buying additional backup batteries, and check that you have the appropriate adapter for the electrical outlets in your destination.

Sharing Your Images
We would love for you to share photos from your trip, and with your permission, may even use your photos in our marketing materials or on our photo blog. Approaching people with a warm smile and using polite gestures or simple phrases to ask permission to photograph them usually works well. It is always recommended to engage people in conversation before asking to photograph them, but if people do not wish to have their photo taken, please honor their requests. We urge travelers to avoid giving money in exchange for photo opportunities, which makes it harder for future travelers to have a meaningful personal interaction with local people.
