We offer several exciting voyages to Baja with a variety of activities. This is the detailed information for the 9-Day Whale Shark Swim Watching departure. To see all departures, please click here.

Set in the brilliant turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez, our adventure brings you up close to the wonders of Baja. With a classic 86-foot wooden ship as our base and kayaks on board, you’ll explore from La Paz to Loreto, enjoying incredible experiences by land and sea. Sea kayak through the mangroves of Isla Espiritu Santo, snorkel with playful sea lions, and track sperm whales and blue whales—the largest creatures to roam the earth—in the “Blue Triangle.” Anchoring each night in a secluded bay, you’ll savor gorgeous sunsets, dine on the freshest seafood imaginable, and watch the magic of the starlit desert sky. Our journey includes a special treat—you’ll have the opportunity to swim and snorkel with the largest fish in the sea—the whale shark—who gather here from early winter to late spring to feed on plankton in the rich waters of the Sea of Cortez.

Itinerary at a Glance

Days 1-2
Cabo San Lucas / La Paz / Swim with Whale Sharks / Embark

Meet at the airport in Cabo San Lucas and transfer to La Paz for overnight. The next day, we head out into the waters by open launch for a swim with the largest fish in the sea, the whale shark. From early winter until late spring, these gentle giants can be found feeding on plankton in the rich waters of the Sea of Cortez. The morning feed is the prime time for encounters, and once we find them, we’ll observe them a bit, then slip into the water to swim and snorkel beside them. The chance to be among these immense creatures ranks as one of the most thrilling wildlife adventures in the world. In the late morning, we embark on our boat and head into the Sea of Cortez.

Days 3-8
La Paz / Sea of Cortez / Isla Espiritu Santo / Blue Triangle

We navigate to enchanting Isla Espiritu Santo, with its remote white-sand beaches, keeping an eye out for pods of dolphins and possibly even whale sharks. Sea kayak past mangroves brimming with blue herons and snowy egrets, and snorkel with playful sea lions near the tiny uninhabited islands that dot the Sea of Cortez. We hike along the same beaches described by author John Steinbeck during his travels with legendary marine biologist Ed Ricketts in 1940. By sea, our intrepid vessel brings us to the “Blue Triangle,” where we’ll watch for breaching blue, sperm, and humpback whales feeding on plankton and squid in these nutrient-rich waters.

Day 9
Puerto Escondido / Depart from Loreto

Anchor in Puerto Escondido, about 15 miles south of the town of Loreto and one of Steinbeck and Ricketts' collection sites. Disembark and transfer to the airport in Loreto for flights home.
