Overview

Set in the brilliant turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez, our adventure brings you up close to the wonders of Baja. With a classic 86-foot wooden ship as our base and kayaks on board, you’ll explore from La Paz to Loreto, enjoying incredible experiences by land and sea. Sea kayak through the mangroves of Isla Espiritu Santo, snorkel with playful sea lions, and track sperm whales and blue whales—the largest creatures to roam the earth—in the “Blue Triangle.” Anchoring each night in a secluded bay, you’ll savor gorgeous sunsets, dine on the freshest seafood imaginable, and watch the magic of the starlit desert sky. Our journey includes a special treat—you’ll cross the spine of the peninsula on a 3-day adventure to Bahia Magdalena (January and February departures) or remote Laguna San Ignacio (March departures) for up-close encounters with gray whales who come to these peaceful, warm-water lagoons each year to breed and give birth to their young.

Itinerary at a Glance

Days 1-3
Cabo San Lucas / La Paz / Gray Whales

Meet at the airport in Cabo San Lucas and transfer to La Paz for overnight. The next day, we head across the peninsula to either remote Bahia Magdalena (January and February departures) or Laguna San Ignacio (March departures). Gray whales—recognizable for their bumpy noses and patterned skin—migrate over 9,000 miles to breed and give birth in these lagoons. We’ll enjoy two excursions by panga for remarkable encounters with these gentle giants—so close you can almost touch them! On Day 3, we return to La Paz for overnight.

Days 4-10
La Paz / Sea of Cortez / Isla Espiritu Santo / Blue Triangle

Embarking in La Paz, we navigate to enchanting Isla Espiritu Santo, with its remote white-sand beaches, keeping an eye out for pods of dolphins and possibly even whale sharks. Sea kayak past mangroves brimming with blue herons and snowy egrets, and snorkel with playful sea lions near the tiny uninhabited islands that dot the Sea of Cortez. We hike along the same beaches described by author John Steinbeck during his travels with legendary marine biologist Ed Ricketts in 1940. By sea, our intrepid vessel brings us to the “Blue Triangle,” where we’ll watch for breaching blue, sperm, and humpback whales feeding on plankton and squid in these nutrient-rich waters.

Day 11
Puerto Escondido / Depart from Loreto

Anchor in Puerto Escondido, about 15 miles south of the town of Loreto and one of Steinbeck and Ricketts' collection sites. Disembark and transfer to the airport for flights home.
