Spectacular Trails and Peaks of the Val D’Aosta

Trip Level

This trip is rated Level 4/5, Moderate to Strenuous. It features daily hikes, many on the Alta Via as we move from one valley to the next, with accommodations in comfortable hotels. Hikes vary from 4-6 hours a day at altitudes between 8,000 and 11,762 feet (the Rifugio Quintino Sella on the flanks of Monte Rosa), and some hikes could be up to 8-10 miles. Shorter hiking options are available on many days, but all hikes are at least Level 4. Although you carry only a daypack on the hikes (our support vehicle will transport the group’s luggage), there are many steep ascents and descents, with an average elevation of 2,000 feet a day, and there are some sections that cross rough or rocky trails. The last section up to the Rifugio Quintino Sella requires care and the use of fixed ropes, but it is not technical. For your own enjoyment, you must be in good physical condition for the trip. Regular hiking or using a stair-climbing machine at your gym are excellent preparatory exercises. Sturdy, well-broken-in hiking boots are necessary for comfort and safety on the trail.

We’ve chosen our hotels for their history and central location. Since they are often in historic buildings the rooms may not conform to uniform international standards. We hope you will be able to enjoy them for their charm and local color. Single rooms can be requested, but are not always available, due to the limited space in some of these hotels. If you require a single room, please make the request as early as possible. European single rooms are often smaller than single rooms in the US. Please note that in Italy, the dinner hour is considerably later than what it is in the US. We do our best to secure early reservations for our groups, but most often the evening meal will be at 8:00 pm.

Weather

Daytime temperatures in the alpine regions of the Val d'Aosta in early summer generally range up to 70°, making for ideal hiking conditions. Rain can occur at any time, though, so be sure to bring along good rain gear.
