From Bali, take a scenic private charter directly to Wakatobi National Park and board our accommodation, a 35-meter motor yacht that hosts eight guests. Enjoy a snorkeling refresher at the House Reef, with its stunning drop-off and overhangs, then cruise to Binongko Island. The next day, we're introduced to Wakatobi's underwater realm as we snorkel at Fish Wall, the reef at Kampung Populia, and Cavern Wall, all loaded with a plethora of fish, sea fans, and even turtles. Wakatobi National Park is nicely protected by the surrounding reefs and islands and there is no coral bleaching. Underwater visibility averages about 100 feet.
Snorkel the hard and soft leather-coral at the shallow reef of Pintu Barat, and at Likuan, explore a steep wall with plenty of overhangs and soft coral. At Orange Wall, we find many black corals, some halimeda patches, and a variety of thriving reef fish. Fish Market Pinnacle brings us an array of topography, and at Hoga Island, we explore a coral slope on the east side, a wall on the west side, and in between, a sandy slope with rock outcrops that host massive numbers of crinoids and coral. The steep wall and sandy slopes of Neptune Garden are full of blue-spotted ribbon-tail rays, sponges, and sea fans. After final snorkeling adventures at Kaledupa Wall and Waitii Corner, depart by private charter for Bali on Day 8, or join our Wakatobi Resort Extension.

      What the Trip is Like

This trip is rated Level 3, Moderate, according to our trip grading system. You need to be comfortable snorkeling in a variety of conditions, including drift snorkels and occasionally against strong currents. While snorkeling is usually at your own pace, it is sometimes necessary to be able to keep up with the group.

      Average Day
      • 4-6 hours snorkeling
      • 2-3 hours sailing
      Review Trip Level Details
In Wakatobi, the climate is tropical but drier than in other parts of Indonesia, and the location is nicely protected by the surrounding reefs and islands. Generally speaking, there are two seasons: easterly winds from June to October, and westerly winds between December and April. The air temperature is warm to hot, ranging between 79°F and 86°F. Humidity is about 75% to 85%. Water temperature in September is between 78°F and 81°F, and from November to March ranges between 82°F to 85°F. That water temperature range is ideal for coral growth and there is currently no coral bleaching. Underwater visibility averages about 100 feet. There are no rivers or lakes bringing sediments, therefore visibility is not affected by rain.
The boat has an experienced on-board chef and team. Breakfast and lunch are usually served on the aft deck, and in between snorkeling sessions, hot drinks and snacks are available. Dinner is served in the salon. There are a la carte menus for lunch and dinner, a combination of Indonesian specialties and Western favorites. A selection of wines and spirits are available as well as soft drinks and juices.
During the snorkel excursions, we will take a small dinghy or skiff to each site. It will always stay with the group so that you can return to the boat at any time.

The Wakatobi journey takes place in an extremely remote and uninhabited archipelago in the Pacific. In the case of serious illness or injury, medical attention and swift evacuation are not available. Once we sail from the Wakatobi Resort, we are far away from towns and medical facilities. In the case of serious illness or injury, we will make every effort to reach medical facilities as soon as possible, but be aware that it may take the boat days to return to the Wakatobi Resort. If you have health or medical issues of concern, please discuss them with your physician before considering this trip.

We strongly recommend you bring your own good quality, well-fitted equipment with you, including mask, snorkel, and fins. Try out your gear in a swimming pool before you go to make sure that it works for you and is comfortable.

      Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

      Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

      Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

      Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

      Level 6 – Very Strenuous

Full-day hikes (5-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Most hikes take place at altitudes above 10,000 feet, with some days ascending as high as 18,000 feet.

On arrival, you'll be greeted and taken to your accommodation, a gleaming-white 35-meter yacht.

Before we depart, we enjoy lunch on board, a trip briefing with our Trip Leader, and time to relax or take an optional afternoon guided snorkel around Wakatobi's House Reef. The snorkeling site is accessible directly off the beach in front of the resort and around the Jetty Bar. It features a healthy reef top, a seagrass bed, and a stunning drop-off, which is just 20 meters from shoreline. Highlights include a great variety of fish, invertebrates, beautiful soft corals, gorgonians, tunicates, whips, sponges, and overhangs—all totaling a spectacular rainbow of color. The edge of Fish Wall is home to two-tone dartfish that can been seen in big families. Looking down the wall, we'll see a variety of beautiful sea fans and green tubastrea corals with many colorful feather stars.

Moving to Kampung Populia, we'll snorkel a reef top that descends a gentle slope to 25 meters and then drops off. Hard coral dominates the slope with intermittent sand chutes. Look out for grooved shrimpfish that dangle above the shallow reef top, turtles, and cascades of fusiliers swimming along the slope.

At Cavern Wall, we'll find a hard coral reef top that drops to a rocky, steep wall with several overhangs. expatriate family operated. As a young child, holidays were to the coast to go snorkeling (she says she learned to swim before she could walk!). A move with her family to Fiji helped her realize her dream of learning to dive and she fell in love with the ocean and all its frontiers. She worked as a volunteer on a marine project in Roatan, and qualified to be a scuba diving instructor. After teaching and guiding for four years, she moved to Indonesia to become a guide at the Wakatobi Dive Resort, which only increased her desire to head to all the amazing and remote locations Indonesia has to offer. In 2008 she helped start up a new liveaboard operation as the Cruise Director and held that job for 12 years, living a nomadic boat lifestyle and enjoying wonderful travels throughout the remote Indonesian Archipelago. Wendy has worked with a number of marine biologists, been involved in looking for new dive areas and fish species, and has now completed more than 13,000 dives. “Indonesia is an incredible place,” she says, “with both its people and nature, you can never really get enough of it.” Wendy is fully conversant in Indonesian and is passionate about conservation of the world's resources.
Born and raised in Southampton in the UK, Andrea Duggan has been a passionate world traveler and scuba diving instructor since 1998, when she left the UK for Southeast Asia and fell in love with the Asia Pacific marine life. It was during her first trip to Indonesia's Komodo National Park that she knew she wanted to work underwater in this beautiful country. This is also where she found her passion for freediving. Since 2009, Indonesia has been her home, residing on liveaboard boats, working, planning, and leading trips throughout the entire Indonesian archipelago. Andrea has traveled to every continent and lived in a handful of different countries including Spain, India, Australia, and Thailand. She speaks several different languages and is fluent in both Spanish and Indonesian. She is passionate about the ocean and loves to share her knowledge and enthusiasm about Indonesia's biodiversity. For higher quality images and the ability to use long lenses for closer wildlife pictures, a DSLR camera is well worthwhile, though heavier. Most digital cameras and phones have good video options, but you may want to consider a GoPro for a lightweight, waterproof option. Always practice ahead of time with new equipment and bring your manual with you. You may want to consider renting camera equipment for your trip from places such as borrowlenses.com. This is an especially good idea for renting large zoom lenses that you may need for just one trip. Adding their extra insurance fee to cover expensive equipment is recommended.

Camera Accessories
We recommend bringing at least two large capacity memory cards or a small digital storage unit (or tablet) to back up your photos, freeing space on your memory cards. Don't forget to bring a battery charger and a backup battery so one is always charged and ready to use. For trips where you may be away from power sources for multiple days, consider looking into a solar-powered battery charger or buying additional backup batteries, and check that you have the appropriate adapter for the electrical outlets in your destination.

Sharing Your Images
We would love for you to share photos from your trip, and with your permission, may even use your photos in our marketing materials or on our photo blog. We request that you send us a small sample of your best images. Please email your photos to wtphotoblog@gmail.com or tag us @WildernessTravel on social media.

Photography Etiquette
When taking pictures of local people, be aware of cultural considerations. Approaching people with a warm smile and using polite gestures or simple phrases to ask permission to photograph them usually works well. It is always recommended to engage people in conversation before asking to photograph them, but if people do not wish to have their photo taken, please honor their requests. We urge travelers to avoid giving money in exchange for photo opportunities, which makes it harder for future travelers to have a meaningful personal interaction with local people. Please always heed your Trip Leader's guidelines for what is appropriate.
