Hiking India's Abode of the Gods with Hashmat Singh

Repertory Trip: Next Offered October 24-November 9, 2018

Overview

The highest Himalayan peaks in India are in the Garhwal: sacred Nanda Devi (25,645’), celebrated home of the bliss-giving goddess Nanda, and magnificent Trisul (23,359’), with its three summits that form “the trident of Shiva.” With veteran Trip Leader Hashmat Singh, our magnificent trek brings you deep into this spectacular realm, the cradle of the Ganges. We’ll learn its legends as we follow Hindu pilgrim trails, visit ancient slate-roofed villages, and cross Kuari Pass (12,000’), with its renowned panoramas of Kamet (25, 443’), Nilkanth (23,425’), Dunagiri (23,182’), Changabang (22,516’), and Nanda Devi. Garhwal was where the early history of Himalayan mountaineering took place. Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India, blazed a trail to Kuari Pass in 1905. Thirty years later, legendary explorers Shipton and Tillman pioneered their adventurous routes here, and we’ll be hiking in their footsteps, discovering Himalayan grandeur on trails unknown by most Western hikers. On our way up to the mountains, we enjoy a visit to Rishikesh, land of yogis, ashrams, and Hindu pilgrims bathing in the sacred Ganges. Join us to experience India’s hallowed peaks and rich culture with our inimitable Himalayan explorer Hashmat Singh!
