France: Hiking in the Land of the Cathars

Medieval Villages of the Languedoc

Repertory Trip: No Future Dates Set

Trip Level

The hiking on this trip is Level 4, Moderate to Strenuous, according to our Trip Grading system. The length of the eight hikes varies from 6.5 to 13 miles. Hiking times are generally 5-6 hours a day, with 1,200 to 2,300 feet of ascent and 760 to 3,000 feet of descent. The highest point we reach is 4,435 feet. All hikes are on undulating terrain, which means trip members should have a good level of fitness for eight consecutive days of walking. Some of our trails are forestry roads, some are small paths traversing high meadows, and there are some rocky trails that can be steep at times, so hiking poles are a bonus. On some sections, if there has been rain, paths can be muddy, so we recommend bringing short gaiters to protect socks and trouser legs. You will carry just a daypack. Well broken-in hiking boots are recommended.

The meals included in the itinerary will be taken at the hotels where we are staying or at restaurants in town, with some picnic lunches. Please note that in Europe, the dinner hour is considerably later than what it is in the US. We do our best to secure early reservations for our groups, but most often the evening meal will be at 7:30 pm.

A Note on Accommodations: In an effort to capture the spirit of old Europe, the hotels that we use are often family-run converted chateaux or inns, full of ambiance and colorful local history. Although the rooms are not always of uniform or international size, our leaders try their best to assign rooms in a fair way so that all participants experience an equal advantage throughout the trip as a whole.

Temperatures are mild, reaching the high 70s middays in May. The weather is variable so be prepared for variety: it can be warm and pleasant, or damp and chilly, and there is always the possibility of an occasional shower. Bring lightweight rain gear that will fit into your daypack.
