Walking with Wildlife in Hwange Extension

An Active Safari in Zimbabwe's Remote Southwest

Join us to go off-the-beaten-track for an active adventure safari in Hwange National Park, home to over 40,000 elephants. Ride elephant-trodden trails by mountain bike, venture into the woodlands on foot with Hwange’s renowned walking guides, and get close-up views of elephants and other big game from a look-out hide dug into the earth. The camp is rustic but comfortable, and in a truly wild place right in the heart of Hwange’s most remote wilderness. In the evenings, you'll enjoy dinner around the camp fire with the option to roll out your sky bed and sleep under the stars. This is an exclusive experience in a vast swath of unspoiled wilderness rarely visited by most safari-goers.

Fly or drive to Jozibanini Camp with game viewing en route. Settle in to your rustic but comfortable home base for exploration over the next few days. With just five tents raised on wooden decks and no one else around but the park rangers, you'll have the wilderness all to yourself. If time permits, enjoy afternoon game activity. Choose from mountain biking, guided walks, or open air game drives. In the evening, savor sundowners by the Jozi water hole while elephants and other wildlife mingle about. Enjoy dinner around the campfire and get a good night's rest in your private tent for tomorrow's full day of safari...LD

Day 2
Mountain Bike, Guided Walk, Game Drive

Your day begins at sunrise, and it will be an active one! After breakfast, you have your choice of safari—start with a mountain bike ride, a guided walk, or a game drive. The elephants here are the star of the show, but you’ll also have the opportunity to encounter lion, wild dog, leopard, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, roan, impala, giraffe, and some of Hwange’s 420 bird species including raptors. Game viewing continues as you make your way back to camp, passing water holes along the way. After lunch and the chance to relax, head to a look-up blind situated next to a pan for the exciting “Elephant Show.” In this cool, comfy dug out, you have incredible up-close encounters with elephants as well as excellent photographic opportunities. The snacks and sundowners show up once the sun begins to set, so you can keep enjoying the lively scene! Back at camp, a hot water bucket shower awaits and dinner is served under the stars...BLD

Day 3
Cultural Visit / Game Viewing

Today, choose your adventure! Grab your binoculars for a game drive along the way to St. Joseph’s School at Gibi Xegu village where you have the chance to spend time with local children and villagers (trying out a few clicks of their unique language!). On the way back to camp, stop for a picnic lunch at a pan. Or, you may choose a morning mountain bike ride, and then a guided walk followed by a picnic lunch at a pan. Return to camp to rest up, and in mid-afternoon head to a look-up blind where the exciting “Elephant Show” continues, or choose a safari by foot, bike or vehicle. You may also choose to visit the nearby Makona park ranger station to meet some of the rangers who protect and patrol the deep south of Hwange. Savor sundowners in an idyllic setting, and head back to camp for hot bucket showers. Dine by the campfire beneath the stars, and roll out your sky bed on the deck of your tent to soak up the surrounding sounds on your last night in Hwange...BLD
