Day 2
Saint Petersburg

Meet your fellow travelers for breakfast. Depart by coach for a panoramic tour of the former capital city of Russia, Saint Petersburg. You will make a first stop at St. Isaac’s Square, which is surrounded by magnificent historical monuments. This square is dominated by St. Isaac’s Cathedral with its fourth largest dome in the world. In the center of the Square, you can see a monument dedicated to Nicholas the First. Drive across the Neva River and view the Spit of Vasilievsky Island flanked by two rostral columns, originally lighthouses that guided ships through the busy port of Saint Petersburg. You'll reach Peter and Paul Fortress, a massive structure which was turned into a political prison. Throughout its history, the fortress held such famous prisoners as the writer Dostoevsky, participants in the 1825 Decembrist uprising and political activists Maxim Gorky and Leon Trotsky, as well as the elder brother of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. In the center of the fortress, you will see Peter and Paul Cathedral, designed by Domenico Tresini. This magnificent church was built between 1713-1732, and it is still the highest point of Saint Petersburg dominating its skyline.

Pass by the Church of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood erected between 1883 and 1907. This marvelous old Russian-style church was constructed on the spot where Emperor Alexander II was assassinated on March 1st, 1881. You'll also explore Nevsky Prospect—not just Saint Petersburg's but Russia's most famous street. It is lined with magnificent palaces, churches and theatrical buildings. At the end of the day, you will be finally transferred to the port to embark aboard your ship....BL

Please note: To visit churches, it is advisable to respect dress code covering the upper body and legs below the knees.
