Hiking the Faroe Islands

Journey to Europe’s Best-Kept Secret

Trip Level

This trip is rated Level 4. Distances are not great on any of the hikes, but unpredictable weather and tricky terrain (including very steep hillsides) play an important factor. Three hiking days will be on narrow sheep trails where the terrain is grassy, muddy, and boggy, and can be quite slippery. The Postman’s Walk on Day 2 and our afternoon hike on Day 4 involve ascents and descents of 1,000-2,000 feet on steep mountain sides, which are rocky in places. Walking poles are essential on these routes, especially heading downhill. These are strenuous hikes and some may find them very challenging. Trip members should be in good shape and have sturdy, waterproof hiking boots. Due to the boggy nature of the terrain, waterproof gaiters are also recommended. The weather on the Faroes will be the deciding factor on all the walks as strong winds, low clouds, and rain make higher altitude hikes too dangerous. If the planned hikes are not possible, then alternative lower-level hikes will be offered. Our accommodations will be in comfortable hotels and a charming guesthouse while in Gjógv on the island of Eysturoy.

Temperatures should be in the mid 50s, perfect for hiking. The weather can provide spectacular clear days but can also be very wet and changeable, and we want you to be well prepared for all you may encounter. Weather in the Faroe Islands is always unpredictable, so you must come prepared for at least some rain and bring appropriate rain gear. Even on sunny days, expect strong winds. It is unlikely that it will be hot.
