This trip is Level 3, Moderate, according to our trip rating system. It features cultural and natural history explorations, sightseeing with day walks, paddle boarding, sea kayaking, and optional boating excursions. No previous paddle boarding or sea kayaking experience is required, but you should be comfortable on and in the water. None of the activities described in this itinerary are considered difficult, but for your own enjoyment of the trip, we recommend you make a special effort to be in good physical condition. Throughout the trip, you’ll enjoy accommodations varying from charming pousadas (small local hotels) to nicer hotels in Rio de Janeiro. Many of the pousadas feature rooms of varying quality and size, and we hope you will be able to enjoy them for their charm and local color.


The ideal time to visit the area around Paraty is from March to November, when temperatures are in the mid-70s. December to February tends to be quite a bit hotter, with considerably more chances of rain (up to 22" in January). Temperatures in Rio de Janeiro during this period range from the high 70s to mid-80s. Note: July is school vacation month, so places will be more crowded.
