Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands: Sea Spirit

Towering Icebergs, Thousands of Penguins, and Tales of Shackleton

What Makes Our Antarctica Trips Special?

  • With over 30 years of experience in Antarctica, we know the continent intimately and have selected the best designed itineraries that combine adventure, style and safety.
  • Small ships provide a wonderful advantage, letting you anchor closer to shore and allowing more time to explore on land—larger vessels are far less maneuverable, and because of regulations in Antarctica must have their passengers wait in shifts to make landfall.
  • A stellar team of on-board experts accompanies you on twice-daily landings and provides fascinating presentations on their fields of expertise, from marine biology to Antarctic history.
  • Each of the ships we’ve chosen have ice-strengthened hulls and advanced stabilization systems—and all adhere to the IAATO’s strict environmental guidelines designed to preserve Antarctica’s unique environment.
  • The majority of the itineraries we’ve selected are aboard all-suite luxury expedition ships with ocean-view staterooms, and abundant public space for relaxing. A few adventure expedition ships are also featured which offer fascinating options to camp, ski, kayak and even scuba in Antarctica.
Choose from a Variety of Ships

We offer several exciting voyages to Antarctica aboard a variety of ships. This is the detailed information for Antarctica, South Georgia & the Falklands: Sea Spirit. To see all departures on all ships, please click here.

Overview

Experience three epic destinations of the Southern Ocean: the wildlife-rich oasis of the Falkland Islands, breathtaking South Georgia Island, with its legends of Shackleton and massive colonies of king penguins, and the celebrated Antarctic Peninsula, a world of towering peaks and icebergs. On our small-ship expedition cruise during the austral summer, adventures by go-anywhere Zodiacs grant us fantastic access to hidden bays full of drifting bergs and shores thronged with chattering penguins and basking elephant seals, while our expert naturalists and historians illuminate the fascinating world of the Antarctic.

Note: This cruise is not exclusive to, nor operated by, Wilderness Travel, who acts solely as agent in booking your reservation with the ship operator. The itinerary, lecturers, and all other arrangements are subject to change at the discretion of the cruise line.

Itinerary

Day 1
Ushuaia, Argentina

The small city of Ushuaia is the perfect starting point for your expedition cruise to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falkland/Malvinas Islands. Located near the southern tip of South America, it boasts beautiful views of the Andres Mountains and the Beagle Channel. Stroll the lively main street of cafes, shops and outfitters, perhaps picking up a last-minute item for your voyage, or enjoying a typical Argentine grill entrée at one of the many casual restaurants. If you arrive early, you will want to visit beautiful Tierra del Fuego National Park. Guests will overnight at the stunningly situated five-star Arakur Resort and Spa, a member of the "Leading Hotels of the World."

Day 1 (1 night)
Day 2
Embarkation Day

In the afternoon, embark the Sea Spirit and set sail down the scenic Beagle Channel.

Day 3
At Sea

Through presentations and informal conversations, a team of experts on Antarctic wildlife, history and geology will enlighten you about what you’ll expect to see in the days ahead.

Days 4-5
The Falklands

The Falkland Islands offer an unforgettable vista of moors and rugged coastlines carved by the South Atlantic, where the wildlife and plant life form a link between Patagonia and Antarctica. On the beaches, elephant seals are a spectacular sight when battling among themselves to establish territories or just simply relaxing. Sea lions and fur seals are also common sights. As many as a million penguins nest in the Falklands every summer, representing five of the world’s seventeen species – King, Gentoo, Rockhopper, Magellanic and Macaroni. What’s more, for the Gentoo, the Falklands are home to the largest population on Earth. Look for black-browed albatrosses nesting on grassy hillsides overlooking the sea.

The capital of the Falklands Port Stanley is the southernmost British outpost in the world. With many reminders of its British heritage such as red phone booths and English pubs, the town boasts other unusual sights like a whalebone arch and shipwrecks along the coast.

Days 6-7
At Sea

Days 8-11
South Georgia

For many, South Georgia is a not-to-be-missed destination within the Antarctic region. These sub-Antarctic islands are mountain peaks emerging from the Scotia Arc, an underwater mountain chain that extends from the Andes to the White Continent. Shaped like a long and narrow whalebone, the islands are home to:

  • Four seal species – southern elephant seal, Antarctic fur seal, Weddell seal, and leopard seal.
  • Several whale species – southern right whales, humpbacks, fin whales, sperm whales, killer whales orcas, and southern bottlenose whales.
  • Antarctic seabirds, about 46% of the world's breeding population of grey headed albatrosses; northern giant petrels, white chinned petrels and Antarctic prions. Most of the world's population of the South Georgia blue eyed shags live there, some 7,500 pairs.
  • Penguins – around half the world's population of macaroni penguins, along with 100,000 pairs of Gentoo penguins and about 6,000 breeding pairs of Chinstrap penguins.
  • The most attractive residents of the South Georgia are King penguins with their orange-yellow crowns. The total number of King penguins is around 400,000 breeding pairs.
Spend four days among the alpine landscapes and penguins colonies. You will also visit to the historic settlement of Grytviken. With its whaling-era remnants and Earnest Shackleton’s gravesite, the one-time whaling town is one of the highlights of South Georgia.

Days 12-13
Scotia Sea

More informative presentations are in store today, as you head toward the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula.

Days 14-18
The Antarctic Continent and the South Shetlands

In the region of the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula you get a great variety of opportunities to actively explore the unique wildlife and breathtaking scenery. With nearly 200 recognized sites, explore the enchanting world of the Sixth Continent. A flexible planning is a key to successful expedition.

Your Captain and Expedition Leader will do their best to show you all the faces of Antarctica. We hope to tick off five penguin, six seal,  several whale species in Antarctic check-list. While cruising along narrow Antarctic waterways, admire huge icebergs of different shapes, sizes and colours. Visit scientific stations representing several different countries and learn about Antarctic scientific researches straight from the source. Of course setting foot on the actual Antarctic Continent is also on agenda.

Days 19-20
Drake Passage

Reality begins to set in during this final sea passage separating the magic world you’ve just explored from the rest of the world you’ll soon be rejoining. Refresh your memories through a photo exchange with newfound friends, and bid farewell to seabirds and whales that you can identify more easily now.

Day 21
Ushuaia / Disembark / Depart

Your morning disembarkation from Sea Spirit is followed by a group transfer to the airport.

Fuel Surcharges

Because the prices published by cruise operators are set so far in advance of the trip dates, they are occasionally faced with exceptional cost fluctuations due to increase in fuel costs that affect the actual cost of running the trip. In most years, no price changes are necessary. However, they do reserve the right to raise or lower the trip price if there is a significant change in costs. If this is the case, your final invoice will reflect the difference in trip cost.

Arrival & Departure Information

Please review the following information before confirming your flight arrangements to Buenos Aires/Ushuaia.  Many Antarctica travelers like to begin their journey by spending a few days in Buenos Aires to get over jet lag and also to allow for any possible weather delays en route.  Note that cruises are not like other trips—if you arrive late, you miss the sailing and you can’t catch up.

It is always an overnight flight to reach Buenos Aires from the US, so you will have to book your flights to depart the US a day prior to the start of the trip. Buenos Aires has two airports; please book your flights to EZE, Buenos Aires’ international airport.

Trip Level

The trip is rated Level 1+, Easy. You will be travelling to a very remote destination. You must be able to complete on board safety drills and emergency evacuation procedures without the assistance of others. Rolling seas and windy conditions require you to be stable on your feet, especially when walking on slippery decks or up and down steep gangways. Shore excursions often require hiking over uneven terrain without the benefit of a developed trail. Some agility is required for getting in and out of the Zodiac landing crafts. While several Zodiac landings are dry, many will require that you step in the water to get ashore. Zodiac and shore excursions are weather permitting.

Explain Trip Level

Best time to go

October, November, Early December (late spring - early summer)

The pack ice begins to break up, creating new landscapes of sculpted ice and pristine icebergs with plenty of fresh snow. It’s mating season for the penguins and other birds with whole colonies in spectacular displays of courtship rituals. You’re also likely to witness nest building and egg tending. Adélie, Chinstrap and Gentoo penguins and other seabirds return to their breeding sites.

Spring wildflowers are blooming on the Falklands and South Georgia Islands.

Elephant seals and fur seals are mating, and King Penguins are laying their eggs on South Georgia. Parents can be seen “carrying” eggs on their feet so that one parent can shuffle around the colony while the other adult goes out to sea to feed. Antarctica is never crowded, but in the early season there are far fewer ships and the vastness and purity of the region is even more pronounced.

Mid December - January (full summer)

These are usually Antarctica's warmest months-the height of the Austral Summer when the sun is up 18 to 20 hours a day. Longer days create great light conditions for fabulous photo opportunities. Wildlife in full swing as temperatures warm and activity levels rise. Penguin chicks are hatching, and you’ll likely see them chasing after any adult penguin that is carrying food. Whale sightings of baleen and toothed whales along the Antarctic Peninsula increase and seal pups can be sighted on the beaches. Some 30 days after hatching, penguin chicks can be found in “crèches,” resembling a nursery of sorts, which leaves both of their tired and hungry parents free to rest and hunt for food.

February - March (late summer)

Whale sightings are at their peak. Fur seals are increasingly common along the Peninsula and offshore islands; young fur seals are also quite playful in South Georgia. Penguin colonies are very active as the penguin chicks begin to fledge, losing their fuzzy down and developing their adult plumage. By now, Falklands' chicks are leaving the nest - parents have abandoned any remaining chicks, and have gone out to sea to feed and fatten up for their own molting stage.

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.
Examples:
  • Royal Rajasthan

Strenuous

What to Know Before You Go

PASSPORT

A valid passport is required for your trip. Be sure to check the expiration date. Your passport must be valid for six months after your date of exit from Argentina. In addition, we recommend your passport has at least two completely blank visa pages for every country you will be visiting. It is very important that the blank pages say “Visas” at the top. The last few pages of your passport, which say “Amendments and Endorsements,” and the final page of your passport, which may not have a page number, are not considered to be legitimate visa pages. You can request a new passport or have extra pages inserted in your current passport through a visa service agency or the US Passport Services Office. Be sure to allow sufficient time to acquire this before your trip.

It is a good idea to carry a photocopy of the photo page and the entry stamp page of your passport as an additional piece of identification, as well as two extra passport photos.

VISAS

US citizens do not need a visa for Chile and Argentina, but a Tourist Card is issued to visitors in Chile.

If you are a citizen of any country other than the US, check with a local consulate for entry requirements.

THE RIGHT CLOTHING FOR YOUR ADVENTURE

Since having the right clothing and gear is vital to the enjoyment of your trip to Antarctica, we have created the Wilderness Travel Gear Store in conjunction with our online retail partner, New Headings, to provide you with exceptional gear and apparel in a one-stop shop. They also provide waterproof layers for rent which can be delivered to you in Ushuaia.

Visit wildernesstravel.newheadings.com to begin shopping.  Be sure to check out our Get Ready Packages, which features 3 Polar Packages that provide excellent value for the gear necessary to keep you warm and dry.

Wilderness Travel donates all profits from your purchases to the cultural and conservation groups we support worldwide. See the projects we support on our Making a Difference webpage.
