The nights sleeping out in the desert were a wonderful experience. The arrangements made were excellent, and the food was fantastic.
This stylish nine-room hotel, just a 10-minute shuttle drive from the center of town, offers a casual elegance and welcoming atmosphere. Guest rooms are decorated in an inviting modern style, with wildlife photography adorning the walls. Communal areas include a large lounge, indoor and outdoor dining areas, and a small swimming pool. The hotel is named after the explorer and polymath Francis Galton, who produced the first maps of Namibia's interior.
Home to the AfriCat Foundation, this luxury bush camp features eight thatched, African-style chalets decorated in earthy tones. The chalets are very spacious, have en suite bathrooms, and can be opened wide during the day for enjoying the views and watching birds in the garden right from your room. A secluded swimming pool awaits at the end of a busy day of game viewing. The food is of a very high standard and the staff and guides are terrific.
The newest addition to Ongava Private Game Reserve is the completely remodeled Andersson's at Ongava. Drawing inspiration from the landscape, guest suites and public spaces have natural stone and wood elements, and there are perfectly placed observation terraces and special nooks for photographers to review and edit their photos. Each suite has an en suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers and a private viewing deck, and the main lounge offers complimentary Wi-Fi and is set near a very productive waterhole, where a wide array of animals gather at all hours and can be viewed at very close range.
At Huab Under Canvas, we enjoy incredible access to Damaraland’s black rhino population. Exclusively for our group, this semi-permanent camp offers delightfully unexpected comfort in the absolute back of beyond, and is renowned for its cuisine. We arrive in time to wash up and enjoy dinner, then gather around a welcoming campfire, savoring the rare experience of being so completely immersed in the wild. Wilderness Travel is proud to sponsor anti-poaching mobile camps here. You’ll meet with researchers and have the thrilling experience of tracking rhino on foot!
Nestled into a rock outcropping of Twyfelfontein Conservancy, Camp Kipwe’s nine exquisite guestrooms blend seamlessly into the desert landscape. At sunset, we’ll climb up to granite overlook with spectacular views across this vast private reserve, for possibly the most memorable cocktail hour you have ever experienced.
The Delight Swakopmund is a boutique hotel with brightly colored artistic touches for an eye-catching and contemporary feel. Room amenities include crisp linens, large bathrooms, fridges, and Nespresso machines. The staff is friendly and the breakfast buffet is out of this world (including oysters and champagne!). Swakopmund's shops and restaurants are only a five-minute walk away.
The location of these desert chalets is simply spectacular—it's the only lodge right inside the national park. This allows us early entry and late exit at Sossusvlei—you'll have the best light for photographing the dunes while other groups are lined up at the gate. You can imagine the fantastic sunrise and sunset views! The chalets, each with their own veranda overlooking the desert plains, are set on stilts linked by wooden walkways, creating the least amount of impact on the fragile desert environment. The main area has a dining room, swimming pool, and a convivial bar.
On the Tok Tokkie trail, we’re welcomed at night to a unique desert camp, with sundowners, al fresco dinners by lantern light, and astounding starscapes in Africa’s first Dark Sky Reserve. We’ll each have our own individual dune bed to sleep in, with a comfy cot, thick duvet, lantern, and bedside table. Drifting off to sleep, we’ll be able to see not only the Milky Way, but the stars of distant galaxies. Here in the NamibRand Nature Reserve, the desert silence is punctuated only by occasional gecko barks and distant hyena cries.
