Cheetahs, Chobe National Park, Botswana

Cheetahs are diurnal hunters, hunting at dusk and dawn. On safari in the vast new Peace Parks spanning Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, we find the full range of Africa’s predators and the continent’s largest herds of elephants as we explore on foot, by boat, and by 4WD.

Southern Africa’s new Peace Parks (or Transfrontier Conservation Areas) are the largest cross-border reserves in all of Africa. They were created to provide a vital migration corridor so that wildlife could move freely between countries without encountering obstacles such as fences. These vast new parks link epic river ecosystems—the great Zambezi, Chobe, and Linyanti—and span the countries of Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. During our unique four-country safari in this luminously beautiful African realm, we find endangered black rhino and Africa’s largest herds of elephant, along with renowned populations of predators, high concentrations of antelope, hippo, crocodile, wild dog, and absolutely incredible birdlife. We explore on foot, by boat, and by 4WD, with accommodations in small, deluxe lodges in spectacular and wild locations.

  • Visit Zambia’s Victoria Falls, Botswana’s Chobe and Linyanti reserves
  • Explore wild northern Namibia, famed Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe

Days 1-2
Siankaba Lodge, Zambia / Victoria Falls

We launch our safari with a boat cruise on the great Zambezi to look for wildlife along the banks, then explore the lush environs of Victoria Falls, where the mile-wide waters of the Zambezi plunge 300 feet to create Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders.” Explorer David Livingstone came upon this natural wonder in 1855 and reported a sight “so lovely it must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.” Our fantastic hideaway lodge, Siankaba, has six beautiful chalets on forested islands in the mighty Zambezi River.

Days 3-4
Bwabwata National Park, Namibia

Ancient Kalahari woodlands, lily-pond wetlands, and shimmering savannas grace the unspoiled wilderness of Bwabwata National Park, a cross-border park that we reach by river boat. Spanning across Namibia and Botswana, Bwabwata is the meeting place of the Chobe and Zambezi rivers, and the abundance of water—and the fact that the animals can roam between countries—sustains a large variety of wildlife. Lion, leopard, hippo, and sable, roan, lechwe and puku antelope are resident in this African wildlife paradise along with roaming herds of elephant. Overnights are at Impalila Island Lodge, set on an island at the meeting place of two mighty African Rivers, the Chobe and Zambezi.

Days 5-7
Chobe Enclave / Linyanti Game Reserve, Botswana

Crossing into Botswana, we relish the extraordinary habitats of the Chobe Enclave as well as Linyanti, an exclusive private reserve on renowned Chobe National Park’s northwestern edge, where spectacular concentrations of elephant gather along the winding Linyanti River. We explore on foot, by 4WD, and on night drives in riverine woodlands that offer cover for leopard, kudu, waterbuck, and impala. The marshes hold red lechwe, sitatunga, hippo, crocs, and incredible birdlife. Our intimate accommodation, Linyati Bush Camp, offers en suite tents on the banks of the Linyanti marshes.

Days 8-11
Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

At nearly 5,000 square miles, Hwange is one of Africa’s most renowned wildlife sanctuaries, known as “the land of the giants” for its big elephant herds. We enjoy a grand finale with game walks, game drives, and night drives on ancient seasonal floodplains and breathtaking savannas where huge numbers of animals congregate. Our remote camp, Somalisa, is a magical place to finish our safari, with just six elegantly furnished tents. Depart via Livingstone, Zambia, on Day 11, or join our Cape Town Extension.
