A Voyage through the Glacial Wilderness of Southeast Alaska
Featuring Renowned Nature Writers Barry Lopez and Richard Nelson

Overview

Southeast Alaska’s stunning fjords and mountain-ringed waterways, including glorious Glacier Bay, are among the world’s grandest landscapes, a wonderland of ice-blue glaciers, snow-capped peaks, and deep forests sheltering plentiful wildlife. In 2015, we offered a Special Event that explored the legendary landscape of Alaska’s Inside Passage with Special Guests Barry Lopez, one of the premier nature writers of our time, and Richard Nelson, cultural anthropologist and award-winning author. It was a resounding success, and due to popular demand, we are pleased to offer a new Special Event in July 2017, and are delighted that Barry Lopez and Richard Nelson will return once again as our incomparable Special Guests.

Navigating remote fjords and quiet inlets aboard the intimate 74-guest Wilderness Explorer, our journey brings us from Sitka to Juneau through some of Alaska’s most scenic waterways, and includes explorations at Chichagof Island, home to a vast bear population, and magnificent Glacier Bay, where 11 tidewater glaciers spill to the sea.

We’ll spend active days hiking, whale watching, sea kayaking, exploring by skiff, and even paddle boarding. At day’s end, we enjoy the welcoming comfort of our boat and unforgettable evening presentations by Barry Lopez and Richard Nelson, whose thoughtful insights on mankind’s relationship with the natural world will bring even greater depth to our journey. This is the perfect way to experience one of the most extraordinary settings in the world, and a rare chance to enjoy the company and perspectives of our two distinguished experts in informal settings on board the ship and on our excursions. We look forward to welcoming you aboard!

Itinerary at a Glance

Day 1, Jul 22, 2017
Sitka, Alaska / Embark

Welcome to Alaska! The lovely town of Sitka, set beneath sharp snow-capped peaks, is an enchanting gem with a picturesque Russian and Tlingit heritage. We board our ship here and head to the scenic channels of the Inside Passage.

Day 2, Jul 23, 2017
Peril Strait / Sergius Narrows

Surrounded by mountains, glaciers, fjords, and narrow inlets and coves, Peril Strait is a great place to watch for otters and whales, scan the shoreline for bears, and look skyward for bald eagles. Our journey brings us through Sergius Narrows, where the open Pacific meets the Inside Passage and vast amounts of water pour through with every change of tide. In one spot, the Sergius Narrows is just 300 feet wide—and 24 feet deep!

Day 3, Jul 24, 2017
Kuiu Island

From a skiff or kayak, we discover fascinating intertidal zones and watch for whales and sea lions in the secluded coves of the deeply indented coastline of Kuiu Island, part of Tongass National Forest. With our expedition team, we enjoy a guided hike to gain great perspectives of this stunning realm, the largest national forest in the U.S.

Day 4, Jul 25, 2017
Chichagof Island

Meandering along the spectacular waterfall coast of Chichagof Island, we marvel at the grand scenery as our crew expertly guides us through unnamed glacier-carved fjords. We anchor in remote waters for an opportunity to board our kayaks and skiffs for a paddle and explore the shoreline on an intertidal walk or forest exploration with our guides.

Day 5, Jul 26, 2017
Glacier Bay National Park

Tidewater glaciers sweep like rivers of ice down massive mountain valleys, tumbling into the sparkling waters of Glacier Bay. This national park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve, is one of America’s wilderness crown jewels. In the company of a national park ranger, we uncover coves and corners of the bay that most visitors miss. Near South Marble Island, we linger to spot the many species of rare seabirds that call this area home, and keep an eye out for brightly-colored puffins and black oystercatchers, along with sea lions, mountain goats, bears, and eagles. Our day is complete with a stop in Bartlett Cove to visit the park headquarters.

Day 6, Jul 27, 2017
Icy Strait

Icy Strait has arguably the richest concentration of whales in Southeast Alaska, and we join the captain on the bridge or the expedition team out on deck in search of humpbacks, orcas, and Steller sea lions. Boarding skiffs, we can get a closer inspection of the rugged and wild coastline, perhaps spotting brown bears on the shores.

Day 7, Jul 28, 2017
Lynn Canal or Chatham Strait

Depending on weather and wildlife conditions, we ply the remote waterways of either Lynn Canal or Chatham Strait. We slip into kayaks or try our skills at paddle-boarding, gliding along rocky outcroppings with our guides. While we keep watch for harbor seals who frequently play in these protected waters, bald eagles will likely keep an eye on our improving paddling skills from the treetops! After an adventurous day, we cap our voyage with a festive Farewell Dinner.

Day 8, Jul 29, 2017
Juneau / Disembark

We cruise into Juneau and disembark after breakfast. Transfer to the Juneau airport, or begin your add-on overnight stay or extended land tour.

Note: This is an expedition cruise, and the daily itinerary and specific activities above are an approximate indication of the actual program, which is entirely flexible in order to provide you with the best possible experience. A journey to Alaska’s northern passages is filled with wildlife opportunities, but by their very nature, animals are unpredictable and sightings of any particular species cannot be guaranteed. The weather in Alaska is also notoriously unpredictable, and our planned activities and their order may change due to weather conditions or to maximize wildlife encounters.
