Tanzania is home to one of the planet's most varied menageries of terrestrial wildlife, and much of its land is dedicated to protected wildlife areas. Tarangire National Park, especially its remote southern end, is Tanzania's hidden gem. It is astounding to see Tarangire's tremendous year-round concentrations of big game: elephant gathered in the hundreds, huge herds of zebra, wildebeest, Cape buffalo, eland, impala, oryx, kongoni, and Grant's gazelle. Leopard can often be found resting in trees, lion are seen along the river, and our masterful Trip Leaders have an eye for spotting even the most elusive animals. From our private camp, exciting game walks enrich our wildlife experiences. The camp is absolutely gorgeous—expect a true “glamping” experience: walk-in tents with en-suite bathrooms, beds with linens and a duvet, and delicious meals served by our long-time staff. Some evenings, we'll take game drives with a spotlight to see the nocturnal wildlife. Another treat here is our close association with the local Maasai.
At remote Lake Eyasi, we meet the pastoral Datoga people, noted silversmiths and keepers of a distinct language, then head to our lodge on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. Here we enjoy a full day of exploring the 105-square-mile crater floor, home to Africa's largest permanent concentration of wildlife.
Today we enter the Serengeti, whose name means “endless plains” in Maasai. There are limitless game viewing possibilities here. From December through June, our safari stops in at Olduvai Gorge, where Mary Leakey made her famous discoveries, en route to our secluded private camp surrounded by the wild Serengeti. In this idyllic setting, we have fabulous access to the migrating herds as we explore in custom-designed Land Cruisers, watching for wildebeest and zebra as well as giraffe, hippo, crocodile, large prides of lion, cheetah, and clans of spotted hyena. Depart on Day 13 via Arusha.

      What the Trip is Like

This trip is rated Level 2+, Easy to Moderate, according to our trip grading system. This is a camping and lodge safari with game viewing by 4WD vehicle and nature walks that can be enjoyed by anyone in reasonably good health. There are a few long driving days over rough roads and rugged dirt tracks. Any African safari is an adventure, and the traveler to Africa should bring along flexibility, a sense of humor, curiosity about new peoples and places, and an openness to the unexpected.
      Review Trip Level Details

At our private camps, we have opportunities for optional bush walks with a professional tracker as well as the flexibility to go out on game drives. The game-tracking walks are not difficult and are conducted at a pace that allows an intimate exploration of the African bush. Although this is not a particularly rigorous trip, we recommend that each participant undertake a preparatory program of physical conditioning. Daily walking or regular hiking, jogging, and stair-climbing are excellent ways to prepare for the trip.

December to March is East Africa's "summer" with daytime temperatures from 80°-90°F and evenings from 50°-60° F. June, July, and August are the coolest months, with lows around 40°F and highs of 70°-80°F. September, October, and November are warmer, with lows around 65° F and highs of 75°-85°F. Scattered rains occur in November and early December, which help to lay the dust.

"This trip was outstanding and exceeded our expectations. It immersed us in the country, and gave us an unanticipated feel for the bush, its grandeur, its wildlife, its culture. The close association with the Maasai was a special treat, and the ability to explore in open cars and on foot enriched the experience, and left clients of other companies with their mouths agape. When we reflect on the trip, the first word which comes from each of us is ‘wow.’"

"What an excellent itinerary. I loved the fly camp, the night game drives, and the walks at Alamana. The "real" Maasai experience we had vs. a canned tourist experience is unforgettable. Loved the camping in Serengeti National Park. I was always comfortable, well fed, and well cared for."

The safari itself was fantastic...the added treats were incredible."

"This was the trip of a lifetime! It was especially meaningful to me because I celebrated my 65th birthday while there and the staff couldn't have been more accommodating. They set up our dinner outside, surrounded by tiki torches and lanterns hung in the trees. Dinner was wonderful and they even baked a special birthday cake for me. When the staff sang the Swahili version of a birthday song, it melted my heart. Of course, the sights that we saw over the course of the two weeks were just unbelievable! I learned so much about so many aspects of Tanzania, its people and wildlife. All of this will remain in my heart for many years to come."

"This was the best trip I've ever had. Magical is the best way to describe it. Everything was so well planned and executed. The entire staff, especially at the camps, was friendly, courteous and helpful. I also appreciated the cultural aspects of the trip, meeting and learning about the Maasai and the day spent with the Datoga and Fatiha Hadzabe tribes. Thank you for including that aspect for us. The game drives were so much fascinating and fun. Every day we would all wonder how the next day could be any different than the previous one. But somehow it always was. Great job!! "

"It was a great trip and will be hard to top!"

      Sandy M.

      Harrisburg, PA

"Many people have told me that going on safari has been their favorite trip of all. Now that I have gone on my first safari with Wilderness Travel I understand what they mean. I didn't enter a single museum or cathedral, but I witnessed something much more moving and emotional—the circle of life in the bush of Tanzania that predates all the museums and cathedrals in the world."

      Skip M.

      Lafayette, CA

"An extraordinary experience. We traveled as a family with three teenage daughters (14, 16, 19) and the trip to Tanzania exceeded all our expectations. The naturalist guides were wonderful—friendly, knowledgeable, patient—and could spot, and identify, animals hundreds of yards away. The tent camps were very special—private picturesque settings, comfortable sleeping arrangements, outstanding staff and service, amazing food (truly amazing, given how remote we were), and easy access to boundless animals for morning and late afternoon drives. I do not know how Wilderness Travel could have organized and orchestrated a better adventure in Tanzania. We will all remember this trip for the rest of our lives."

      Steve D.

      Danville, CA

"The trip was outstanding. Well designed itinerary, great camp sites and extremely nice and informative guides. Great food, especially at the two camps—we were all asking for a few of the recipes!"

      Steve H.

      Verona, WI

"What an exceptional itinerary, safari, and camping experience! The different parks highlighted different animals and the biodiversity and majesty of the region. The volume of animals is extraordinary and our guides did a great job of finding things that few others would find (cheetahs on the hunt! cheetah cubs! lion cubs by themselves!). I'll never forget how moving seeing these animals in their natural habitat was. The bush camps were exceptional—brings new meaning to ‘glamping!’ Being able to stay in the bush in comfort really magnified the overall excellence of the safari."

      Steve S.

      San Francisco, CA

"The trip exceeded my expectations. The guides were incredible (they saw animals where I only saw bushes). The accommodations were perfect and the food was delicious and healthy. We saw so many animals and the guides were so knowledgeable."

      Schaumburg, IL

"This was my first safari and first trip with Wilderness Travel...it will not be my last! This was truly a trip of a lifetime, outstanding in every way!"

      Susan S.

      Riverwoods, IL

"I could not be more happy about my Wilderness Travel experience. My eyes and heart were opened by the environment and the animals. I'm grateful for morning call with tea, for porridge by the fire, and for the subtle variety in each day."

      Suzanne L.

      Norwich, VT

"All the planning, all the money in the world, does not make for an excellent trip. It's all a matter of the guides and staff. To that end, WT has the creme de la creme. From Mzee on down to the water carriers, everyone was professional, friendly, helpful, and competent."

      Suzette N.

      New Orleans, LA

"Fabulous trip. The best vacation I've experienced."

      Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

      Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

      Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

      Level 5 – Strenuous

In addition to the large numbers of animals, the sheer variety of species seen in Tarangire continues to be one of its attractions. The short rains of November and December enrich Tarangire's grasslands, creating a canvas so green it almost defies description. At this time of year, bird species flood into Tarangire from southern Europe as they migrate for the winter, boosting an already full bird list. During the rainless summer months. the thousand-square-mile Tarangire region is a magnet for migrating herds, as the perennial Tarangire River becomes a lifeline for migratory herds of wildebeest and zebra, who travel to reach its fresh waters. It is astounding to see the tremendous seasonal concentrations: elephant clustered in the hundreds, huge herds of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, eland, and impala, smaller groups of oryx, kongoni, and Grant's gazelle and troops of baboon. Cheetah are rare here, but this is good habitat for leopard that can often be found resting in trees. Lion can be seen along the river or under trees, enjoying this dry-season time of bounty. Tarangire is also famous for its abundant birdlife.

Special wildlife viewing activities include exploration in open vehicles with a 360-degree game viewing panorama (green season only—at other times of the year, we use our regular Toyota Land Cruisers). We also take exciting bush walks, exploring in the company of one of our full-time walking guides stationed at our Osunyai wilderness camp and qualified in all aspects of true game walking. Our specialist walking guide has extensive knowledge of wild animal behavior and the ability to track any animal of interest that we encounter during the walk. Feeling adventurous? On one of these days, we spend the day on a game drive on the floor of Ngorongoro Crater, the largest unbroken caldera in the world and surrounded by steep walls rising some 2,000 feet from the floor. Ngorongoro's beauty and vastness must be seen to be believed: on the crater's 105-square-mile grassy floor lives Africa's largest permanent concentration of wildlife, a sort of mini-Serengeti in a phenomenally scenic setting. During our explorations, we're likely to see elephant, zebra, wildebeest, and buffalo, and there's hardly a better place on earth for observing lion than on the crater floor, where the lion prides are large. This is also one of the best places to see the endangered black rhino—about a dozen have been introduced into the crater environment and they are carefully monitored by biologists.

While in the area, we will also have the experience of a cultural visit with the Datoga and Hadza. The Datoga consider themselves to be the oldest tribe in Tanzania, with origins dating back 3,000 years. They gradually migrated south from southern Sudan and Ethiopia and settled in the highlands of Kenya and Tanzania in about AD 1500. Originally fierce warriors, they are now mostly pastoralists and farmers, as well as skilled blacksmiths. Their clothing is generally of a reddish-brown color (the color of soil), with women wearing patched leather dresses, and they are distinguished for their distinctive tattooing around the eyes. The Hadza (who call themselves the Hadzabe) are one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes left in the world and distinct from other tribes in East Africa, both linguistically and genetically. Their diet consits of wild honey, tubers, berries, baobab, and large and small game. I didn't enter a single museum or cathedral, but I witnessed something much more moving and emotional—the circle of life in the bush of Tanzania that predates all the museums and cathedrals in the world.
Steve D.
Danville, CA
An extraordinary experience. We will all remember this trip for the rest of our lives.
Steve H.
Verona, WI
The trip was outstanding. The bush camps were exceptional—brings new meaning to ‘glamping!’ Being able to stay in the bush in comfort really magnified the overall excellence of the safari.
Susan C.
Schaumburg, IL
The trip exceeded my expectations. As of March 2024, we no longer require guests who exhibit cold or flu symptoms to test for COVID-19. Guests who test positive for COVID-19 will be required to follow local health protocols, wear a mask in group vehicles and during indoor activities for the remainder of the trip, and may be asked to dine separately. Any travel companion sharing a room with them will also be required to wear a mask at all times in the shared group vehicles for the remainder of the trip.

We encourage all travelers to actively monitor their own well-being and to use common-sense preventative measures such as regular handwashing (or use of hand sanitizer) and/or wearing a face mask. If you are feeling sick, we encourage you to self-isolate and/or wear a mask to protect your fellow travelers. Guests may be required to wear a mask if the Trip Leader believes the situation warrants it.

Leading up to the trip, we encourage you to do everything possible to stay healthy, including avoiding close contact with anyone displaying cold or flu symptoms and washing your hands often. As always, by traveling with Wilderness Travel, guests agree to be accountable for their own well-being. If you are worried about a fellow traveler's cold or flu-like symptoms, you may opt to wear a mask or distance yourself as needed. It's important to remember that there are inherent risks associated with travel and group settings.

These protocols will be reviewed and adjusted as guidance evolves.

Camera Recommendations
With the many advances in digital technology, a simple compact digital camera or even your smartphone is capable of taking pictures suitable for the needs of most people. For higher quality images and the ability to use long lenses for closer wildlife pictures, a DSLR camera is well worthwhile, though heavier. Most digital cameras and phones have good video options, but you may want to consider a GoPro for a lightweight, waterproof option. Always practice ahead of time with new equipment and bring your manual with you. You may want to consider renting camera equipment for your trip from places such as lensrentals.com. This is an especially good idea for renting large zoom lenses that you may need for just one trip. Adding their extra insurance fee to cover expensive equipment is recommended.

Camera Accessories
We recommend bringing at least two large capacity memory cards or a small digital storage unit (or tablet) to back up your photos, freeing space on your memory cards. Don't forget to bring a battery charger and a backup battery so one is always charged and ready to use. For trips where you may be away from power sources for multiple days, consider looking into a solar-powered battery charger or buying additional backup batteries, and check that you have the appropriate adapter for the electrical outlets in your destination.

Sharing Your Images
We would love for you to share photos from your trip, and with your permission, may even use your photos in our marketing materials or on our photo blog. We request that you send us a small sample of your best images. Please email your photos to wtphotoblog@gmail.com or tag us @WildernessTravel on social media.

Photography Etiquette
When taking pictures of local people, be aware of cultural considerations. Approaching people with a warm smile and using polite gestures or simple phrases to ask permission to photograph them usually works well. It is always recommended to engage people in conversation before asking to photograph them, but if people do not wish to have their photo taken, please honor their requests. We urge travelers to avoid giving money in exchange for photo opportunities, which makes it harder for future travelers to have a meaningful personal interaction with local people. Please always heed your Trip Leader's guidelines for what is appropriate.
