To walk in the African wilds is magical—and in the Serengeti, it’s one of the greatest wildlife experiences on earth. This journey combines the ultimate Serengeti walking safari with a classic 4WD safari, all under the wonderful guidance of Gary Strand, a veteran WT Trip Leader and one of Africa’s top safari guides. Gary is a passionate conservationist and explorer with an amazing knowledge of African wildlife gathered from nearly 30 years of guiding in every country on the continent. On the first part of our safari, we “walk on the wild side” on private Masai gamelands adjoining Serengeti National Park, following ancient pathways made by migrating wildlife, enjoying sightings of elephant, buffalo, and eland, examining termite mounds and birds’ nests, and savoring the thrill of being in a pure Serengeti wilderness with no vehicles. We then board rugged 4WD vehicles to roam the central part of Serengeti National Park and witness the vast wildebeest and zebra herds of the “great migration.” We promise you an unforgettable Serengeti wildlife adventure with a true expert!

Day 1 (May departure)
Arusha

Arrive in Tanzania for an overnight at Serena Mountain Village, a lodge surrounded by coffee plantations.

Days 2-5
Serengeti Light Mobile Camp

The Masai have granted us special permission to camp on their private land bordering the Serengeti, which allows us extraordinary access to the wildlife. The small and large game we encounter on a foot safari offers a much more complete picture of life within the Serengeti ecosystem than what we see from a vehicle, and our guides open this fascinating world to us through their extensive knowledge. Our days are filled with exhilarating walks amid towering kopjes (rock outcrops), through open grasslands, and along seasonal river systems. Along the way, we pause to watch elephants as they gather to drink at waterholes, look for plains game, from graceful impalas to the huge eland, the largest of antelopes, and scan the sky for various eagles, vultures, and other birds of prey soaring in the updrafts. Since we’re on foot, we can also examine birds’ nests and look for large leopard tortoises, multi-colored agama lizards basking on the rocks, a colorful host of butterflies, and marvelous birdlife from malachite kingfishers to grey-crowned cranes. Each evening, we gather around the campfire under a canopy of stars for a fine meal and discuss the days’ adventures before we drift to sleep to the sounds of the African night—this truly is “Tanzania’s ultimate walking safari!”

Days 6-10
Migration Private Camp

Heading into the central Serengeti, we camp in fantastic wilderness setting in a secluded section of Serengeti National Park far from the lodges. We immerse ourselves in the “great migration” by 4WD vehicle, observing vast numbers of migrating wildebeest and zebra, along with giraffe, buffalo, topi, hartebeest, waterbuck, impala, reedbuck, bushbuck, dikdik, hippo, croc, and diverse birdlife. We are likely to see large prides of lions lounging in the grasslands or perhaps fresh from a kill, and we’ll keep an eye out for spotted hyena patrolling in matriarchal clans. The river tracks offer the best chance to see leopard, usually in the branches of acacia or sausage trees. Cheetah can also be seen here as well as serval and caracal, two smaller African cats. We depart via Arusha on Day 10.

What the Trip is Like

This trip is rated Level 3, easy to moderate. It is an active safari featuring extensive bush walking, supplemented by game drives. Participants must be have good mobility, in good health, and in good shape. Any African safari is an adventure, and the traveler to Africa should bring along flexibility, a sense of humor, curiosity about new peoples and places, and an openness to the unexpected.

Serengeti Light Mobile Camp: Mobile camps allow us access into the more remote areas of the Serengeti with as much comfort as possible. The camp has lightweight tents that are spacious enough to allow enough headroom to stand up and are furnished with camp cots and bedding. The staff sets up a shared shower and toilet facility. Meals are enjoyed around the campfire or at a table under a weatherproof shade awning, with wine and beer served. During the walking portion of the safari, we walk about 5-6 miles per day, typically in the early morning and in the late afternoon. Although the walks are not tests of your endurance, good footwear is recommended, such as lightweight hiking boots or walking shoes with lug soles.

Migration Private Camp: Our exclusive private camp is set in a tranquil and beautiful spot in Serengeti National Park. At camp, we live in comfort: we sleep in large, airy, walk-in tents, generally about 10 by 14 feet, with full-width windows and en suite bathrooms including a warm-water shower and toilet. Interior lighting is provided by rechargeable lamps. Tents are furnished with twin beds (or one queen bed), hanging wardrobe, luggage rack, and bedside table. The floor is covered with sisal matting or a rug. At the front is a small veranda with two wooden chairs, a small table, and a wash basin. The entire tent is covered by an extended nylon rain-fly to provide protection from sun and rain. Tents are spaced far apart and individually positioned for privacy and optimum views. Our experienced camp manager and staff see to the daily operations of camp. We enjoy our dinners either al fresco or in a large dining tent set beneath a shady tree. The dining tent is furnished with a table set with flatware, china, and glasses. Wine and beer are served with our meals. Our camps operate without noisy generators; instead, we use rechargeable resources and propane refrigeration, which allows us to savor the sounds of the African wilds without the interference of motor noise. Game drives are in 4WD Land Cruisers vehicles with guaranteed window seating (maximum of 5 passengers per vehicle)—there's no taking turns for the window seats. A cooler of drinks and refreshments is carried aboard, along with a library of field guides and maps. Our 4WD vehicles can go virtually anywhere, an important feature when we're tracking game, and they add a taste of adventure to your African safari.
