With its iconic savannas, wilderness beaches, and the utter profusion of wildlife in its parks and reserves, Tanzania offers excitement at every turn. We’ve created a unique experience of this famous land that explores three distinct and different African ecosystems: the golden savannas of the Serengeti, the lush coastal sanctuary of Saadani National Park on the Indian Ocean, and wild Selous National Park, Tanzania’s best-kept secret and one of the remotest corners of wild Africa. With game walks, river safaris, and 4WD excursions, we experience a wonderful array of wildlife venues, from game-thronged plains to wilderness beaches, coastal deltas, and river-laced baobab woodlands. Best of all, we experience it all under the wonderful guidance of Gary Strand, veteran WT Trip Leader and one of Africa’s top safari guides. Gary is a passionate conservationist with an amazing knowledge of African wildlife gathered from over 30 years of guiding in every country on the continent. Bush flights whisk us from one location to the other, offering birds-eye views, and our accommodations range from our own private mobile camp in the Serengeti to delightful game lodges on the beach in Saadani and on the banks of the beautiful Rufiji River in Selous. Join us and discover all the wild beauty of Tanzania!

Arusha / Private Camp Northern Serengeti
After an overnight in Arusha, a bush flight whisks us to the northern Serengeti where our safari begins right away with a game drive en route to our private camp. Here we savor being far from the safari crowds and have special access to a rich mosaic of Serengeti habitats deep in the Serengeti ecosystem, where thousands of wildebeest, gazelle, topi, buffalo, and zebra draw predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards. We also enjoy off-road travel and night drives with a spotlight to look for nocturnal animals. Each night, we fall asleep to the sounds of the African night, perhaps the distant cry of a hyena or the soft padding of elephants grazing near our camp.
Saadani National Park
Flying to the tropical coast, we head to our lovely beach hideaway, Saadani River Lodge, whose 17 suites are nestled amid shady trees along the Wami River, close to Saadani National Park. The guest “tree houses” have private balconies and attached bathrooms. Saadani is the only coastal wildlife sanctuary of its kind on the eastern coast of Africa, with a tranquil setting and gorgeous Indian Ocean sunsets. During our two days here, we can boat into the open delta of the river past pods of hippo and basking crocodiles and take game drives to look for monkeys, hyenas, jackals, elephants, gazelles, and antelopes. At night, nocturnal species such as civet cat, genet (and with luck, leopards) might be seen, and a sand island offshore offers good snorkeling and swimming in warm waters.
Selous Game Reserve / Depart
The Great Ruaha River and Rufiji River braid through the enormous Selous Game Reserve, their waters attracting a vast number of African mammals and over 440 species of birds. Given its isolation from Tanzania’s popular northern safari circuit, the Selous is in a relatively undisturbed ecological state. We set out for game walks with a tracker-guide as well as 4WD gameviewing excursions and boat cruises along the meandering river. Our accommodation, Sand River Selous, has thatched-roof stone cottages overlooking a wide bend of the Rufiji River and breathtaking river views. Depart Day 12 via Dar Es Salaam.

What the Trip is Like
This trip is rated Level 2+, Easy to Moderate, according to our trip grading system. This is a camping and lodge safari with gameviewing by 4WD vehicle, optional game walks with a professional tracker, and river safaris that can be enjoyed by anyone in reasonably good health. There are a few long driving days over rough roads and rugged dirt tracks. The game-tracking walks are not difficult and are conducted at a pace that allows an intimate exploration of the African bush. Although this is not a particularly rigorous trip, we recommend that each participant undertake a preparatory program of physical conditioning. Daily walking or regular hiking, jogging, and stair-climbing are excellent ways to prepare for the trip. Any African safari is an adventure, and the traveler to Africa should bring along flexibility, a sense of humor, curiosity about new peoples and places, and an openness to the unexpected.
Game Drives and Wild Animals: During game drives, we can at times get quite close to wild animals. Being very quiet improves everybody’s chances of observation. In the interest of safety, your Trip Leader explains limitations on movement while on game drives, in the safari vehicles, and around camp. Incidents with wild animals are extremely rare on safaris, but no camping safari can guarantee immunity from such incidents. Wilderness Travel is not to be held responsible for incidents involving the behavior of wildlife.
