The powerful sweep of human history in Syria is evident in its dazzling Roman cities and completely intact Crusader castles. Head out to explore the massive Crusader stronghold of Crac des Chevaliers, discover Roman Apamea on a walk down its mile-long colonnaded street, and roam the authentic Ottoman-era covered souk in the medieval city of Aleppo. Enjoy a grand finale in Palmyra, a glorious 2nd century desert metropolis once ruled by Zenobia, the queen who dared to challenge Rome. This journey is a comfortable one, with excellent hotels, private English-speaking guides, and air-conditioned vehicles.
Itinerary at a Glance
Day 1-2
Damascus
Arrive in Damascus in the evening. The next day, explore this historic city, with its Old Quarter enclosed by a Roman wall, and visit 12th century red-domed tomb of the great warrior Saladin.
Day 3
Crac des Chevaliers
Visit the picturesque hill town of Maaloula, with its ancient Church of Saint Sergis, then walk the ramparts of Crac des Chevaliers, a beautifully preserved fortress-castles built by the Crusaders. We also visit the 5th century St. George Monastery.
Days 4-5
Apamea /Aleppo
Explore the 2nd century Roman ruins of Apamea, a set in a beautiful lush valley, and roam the medieval bazaars of fascinating Aleppo, a center for trade between Asia and the Mediterranean since Roman times.
Day 6-7
Palmyra
Discover the Roman metropolis of Palmyra, one of the great archaeological sites in the world, rising out of the desert like a mirage. Visit the monumental gateway, market place, amphitheater, and the marvelous temple at Baal.
Days 8-9
Damascus / Depart
Return to Damascus, with an afternoon visit to the Roman ruins at Shabha. Depart on Day 9.
What the Trip is Like
This trip is rated Level 1, Easiest. It is an overland touring trip with day walks to explore the fascinating temples and wonderful towns of this ancient and modern civilization. It can be enjoyed by anyone in good health who has no mobility restrictions.
