Join our Trip Leader Extraordinaire Martin Meyer for an adrenaline-filled journey that celebrates the spectacular beauty and immense variety of South Africa, complete with hiking, shark diving, tandem sky diving, river tubing, and a thrilling walking safari! South Africa’s unique geography of rugged peaks, golden savannas, dazzling coastlines, and eight major ecological zones—together with a mosaic of fascinating cultures—has given it the nickname “A world in one country.” We set out to enjoy that world in fantastically adventurous (but safe!) ways as we hike across iconic Table Mountain, don wetsuits to go cage-diving amid great white sharks, jump out of a plane at 9,000 feet on a tandem sky-dive over the spectacular Cape Peninsula, and float by inner tube down the dramatic gorge of the Storms River to the turquoise Indian Ocean. Our grand finale is an unforgettable walking safari in a private game reserve in Greater Kruger National Park, one of the world’s greatest wildlife paradises, with unforgettable overnights in a secluded tented camp under the star-filled African sky. If you were looking for an Africa “bucket list” journey, this is it!

Cape Town / Table Mountain Hike / Shark Dive / Tandem Sky Dive
Cape Town’s flat-topped peak known as Table Mountain dominates the northern end of the Cape Peninsula with its dramatic cliffs and gorges. We enjoy a full-day hike on this famed mountain, then head out for a thrilling “shark dive” at Gansaii Bay, a chance to watch great white sharks up close from the safety of a diving cage. Our next adrenaline experience is a spectacular morning tandem sky dive over the famed scenery of the Cape Peninsula, followed by a relaxing tour along the Cape Peninsula all the way to the Cape of Good Hope.
Tsitsikamma National Park / Hiking / River Tubing / Zip Line
On South Africa’s lush Garden Route, we swim at wilderness beaches, ferry out to Featherbed Nature Reserve, ride a zip line, and go inner-tubing on the Storms River, a wet and wild adventure that includes swimming, rock hopping, and floating down small rapids. On Day 9, relax with a sunset cruise on peaceful Da Gama Lake in the lowveld.
Greater Kruger National Park / Walking Safari / Field Camp / Tanda Tula
We head to world-renowned Greater Kruger National Park, home to one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife on the African continent. On two-day walking safari with specialist game-trackers, we experience African wildlife on foot and up close, the way the early explorers did. Two overnights are at Tanda Tula Field Camp, where we share stories around the campfire and sleep in walk-in safari tents under the star-filled African sky. Our final night is in elegant Tanda Tula Lodge, one of the most luxurious lodges in all South Africa, set amid a vast African wilderness. Depart on Day 13 via Johannesburg.

What the Trip is Like
This trip is rated as Level 3. It is a hotel-and-lodge-based adventure with a variety of vigorous activities, from hiking and shark-cage diving to tandem sky-diving and river tubing. We begin with a full-day 5-6 hour hike on Table Mountain. Although you carry only a daypack on the hike, there are a steep ascents and descents on the trails, so for your own enjoyment, you should have hiking experience. On the shark-cage dive, you will don your wetsuit and jump a short distance off the deck into the shark cage to look for sharks (or watch from the deck if you prefer). On the tandem sky dive, you will be harnessed to a professional sky diver for a thrilling jump, and no previous experience is required. On the zipline, you will be securely harnessed to a steel cable and pull yourself along with pulleys. On the morning of river tubing, you will float by inner tube over small rapids, rock hop, and hike. On the walking safari at Tanda Tula, the pace is leisurely and the distances are not long. For two nights at Tanda Tula Field Camp, we sleep in large walk-in tents with beds, enjoying a chance to wake to the sounds of an African dawn. An experienced camp manager and his staff see to the daily operations of the camp, with meals served by the staff either in a dining tent or under the stars.
