The 34-guest yacht Callisto gives us privileged access to the palm-fringed islands and river deltas of West Africa, where we discover natural wonders and an array of West African cultures. We begin in Senegal, sailing south to explore by pirogue in the mangrove-lined channels of the Saloum River, then further along the coast to Guinea-Bissau and its fascinating Bijagos Islands, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and habitat for rare salt-water hippos as well as home to remarkable tribal people. Our route continues southward to The Gambia, where we visit its most important wildlife reserves, including Kiang West National Park. Our return voyage brings us back to Senegal to visit Dakar’s lively Marché Soumbedioune and historic Île de Gorée, a World Heritage Site and haunting outpost of the Atlantic slave trade.

Days 1-3
Dakar, Senegal / Saloum River

Board Callisto in Dakar and sail south along the coast to explore the meandering Saloum River. We navigate by local pirogue in a maze of islands and mangrove creeks interspersed with fascinating villages, including Fadiout, with its houses built of crushed seashells, and the colorful fishing village of Joal.

Day 4
Bissau, Guinea-Bissau

Part of the Mali Empire from the 13th to 15th centuries, Guinea-Bissau was a Portuguese colony until its independence in 1974. Calling at Guinea-Bissau’s capital, whose streets are lined with colonial houses, we stroll the Bandim Market, a good place for wood carvings and hand-loomed fabric.

Days 5-8
Bijagos Archipelago

Sailing out to the remote Bijagos Archipelago, we discover seldom-visited tropical islands covered with dense forests and impressive biodiversity. One of our landings is Orango Island, with its saltwater-dwelling hippos, and we visit local villages to meet the friendly people of Bijagos, who retain their ancient matrilineal culture.

Days 9-10
Banjul, The Gambia / Kiang West National Park

In Banjul, capital of The Gambia, we visit Abuko Nature Reserve, home to rich birdlife as well as red colobus and callithrix monkeys, and the mangrove waterways of the Baobolong Wetlands Reserve, a noted bird sanctuary.

Day 11-13
Dakar, Senegal / Ile de Goree

Returning to the lively Senegalese capital, we visit markets famed for their traditional healers as well as a contemporary artist’s studio, and we ferry out to the Ile de Goree, with its haunting Slave Castle. Depart on Day 12, arrive home on Day 13.

Callisto

The elegant 34-guest Callisto offers an intimate experience aboard a luxurious yacht. Her small size allows visits to unspoiled ports, pristine beaches, and coves and harbors familiar to fishermen and other sailors of small craft, but inaccessible to large cruise liners. The spacious staterooms are beautifully furnished with fine fabrics, and all have sea views (with large windows on the Leto deck and portholes on the Daphne deck). Cabins are air-conditioned and feature twin or queen beds, generous storage, telephone, TV/DVD, and marble-appointed bath with shower. The lounge is warm and inviting, and the Callisto’s superb cuisine is served at single, unassigned seating in the spacious dining area or al fresco on one of her two broad decks. Serviced by a crew of 18, the Callisto also features a library, email service, Jacuzzi, and a swimming platform.
